La Tania is a small town between Le Praz and Meribel in the heart of the French Alps.

It's a short distance away from the Three Valleys region, which has 335 green, blue, red and black ski runs.

The slopes are perfect for both beginners and more experienced skiers.

Why go?

If you’ve met someone who's been before, you’ll find that they rave about the slopes, food and atmosphere.

From skiing to tobogganing, there’s a breadth of activities to do and try.

The slopes aren’t bad either, with pistes ranging from easy blues to black diamonds – not to mention the snow parks filled with jumps.

After the hard (but fun) work of skiing finishes for the day, you (and the kids) can enjoy catered meals, game nights and even spa days where you’re pampered with massages and visits to the steam room.

And, by the time the evening has come around, you’ll feel completely exhausted and ready for a VERY good night’s sleep.

The combination of skiing, great food and other fun activities makes a great holiday the whole family will remember and talk about for years to come.

Your kids will learn a new (and thrilling) skill, while you spend some quality time together.

What’s not to love?

How to prepare for the trip

Going skiing as a family is great fun but needs detailed planning.

Mum of three, Laura Hazell, from Alpine travel company Ski Beat, has some top insider tips for hitting the slopes with kids in tow.

From your essential packing list to booking the right ski school, find out everything you need to know about preparing for a skiing trip with kids, here.

How to get there

Ski Beat’s very efficient team will organise the flights (one hour) and the coach transfer from the airport to the chalet (three hours).

Bring along a flight pillow, snacks, books and an iPad with your kids’ favourite movies pre-downloaded and your children will be set for the journey.

Where should I stay?

There are many chalets to choose from in La Tania, but we stayed at the recently refurbished Nid Alpin.

It has a spacious open-plan living room which connects to a separate kitchen and dining room, featuring a smart TV and access to a terrace overlooking one of the many slopes in the area.

The chalet has six bedrooms with en suite bathrooms and it can house up to 12 people.

There's also a separate room outside to store all your ski equipment, too.

You can also ski in and out of the chalet, which will save you and the kids the hassle of walking up a steep hill after a long day.

What are the slopes like?

If this is yours or your children’s first time skiing, La Tania is the perfect place to start.

The village has several ski schools, such as Oxygen, which has experienced snowboard and ski instructors ready to make you fall in love with the sport.

A T-Bar lift will take you up a green slope that’s short, quiet and easy for anyone to learn on.

For those who are a little more experienced, La Tania offers doorstep access to the vast Three Valleys region, where you’ll find red and black pistes, snow parks, moguls and also lots of other villages to explore.

What other activities are available?

If your children don't want to ski all day, there are several other activities to take part in.

Younger children can enjoy sledging, ice skating, bowling or even a simple snowball fight outside the chalet!

Those who like to live on the wild side can enjoy a paragliding adventure, overlooking the dramatic landscape.

Eating and drinking

Every morning, your chalet host will take your breakfast order and there's anything from eggs and bacon to porridge and toast on offer.

Fresh coffee and tea will also make an appearance and, of course, no breakfast in the French Alps would be complete without a basket of croissants!

When you return from your day of skiing, a fresh pot of tea and a homemade cake or biscuits will be waiting for you on the table (your chalet host will make a specific type if you ask the day before).

In the evenings, you'll be cooked a delicious three-course meal, ranging from French onion soup and tartiflette, to individual key lime pies and cheeseboards.

During your stay, you’ll have a free night to make a reservation at one of the restaurants in La Tania or the neighbouring villages.

If you’d like to stay in La Tania and don’t want to spend too much money, head over to Le Chrome, where you’ll find a menu of simple but delicious options like burgers and cheese fondue.

The Ski Lodge is also a good option when choosing a restaurant close to home, as the prices won’t break the bank and has good portion sizes.

If you want to venture outside of La Tania, head over to Cave des Lys in Le Praz to have a mouth-watering dinner of cheese fondue, raclette, and wine.

This trip is perfect for ...

Families with children who can either ski already or want to learn.
