- Difficulty Level Easy
Preparation
- Total Time 35 mins
- Preparation Time 5 mins
- Cooking Time 30 mins
- 200g split red lentils
- ½ sweet potato (you could also use a potato), diced
- 1 carrot, diced
- ½ leek, sliced
- Add all the ingredients to a saucepan and cover with 300ml water
- Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat, cover and simmer for about 30 minutes or until the vegetables and lentils are tender. Add a little more water if needed
- Puree or mash into the desired consistency
Tips
There's no need to soak split red lentils before cooking. Just give them a quick rinse in cold water. However, if you do want to soak them, that will reduce the cooking time.
Variations
We've used carrots and leek, but really you can use whatever veg you have lying around. Sweetcorn and peas are always baby favourites, or try adding a little courgette or spinach to help your baby learn to love new flavours.
Once your baby is ready to try new flavours, why not try giving them a tasty lentil-based baby dhal?

Thank you for the great inspiration for Weaning recipes! This is the 3rd recipe I have tried and my little girl has loved them all. I never would have dreamt of a Lentils Dish! ;) Please keep them coming!

Green lentils don't mash like red ones as they are a lot harder and keep their shape, so it's probably best to keep to red ones for babies

can you freeze lentils once they cooked?

This went down a treat with my 6 month old. The lentils add a delicate spice to the taste and it's nice and easy to cook.
