Plus, it's all much healthier than a takeaway – winner! Just make sure to save some for yourself!

Vegetarian pizza base ideas

Making your own pizza base is easier than you think! You can follow our easy pizza dough recipe here, using simple ingredients you probably already have in the house.

Alternatively, if you need a no-yeast pizza you can follow our no-yeast pizza base recipe here.

Plus, if you've got a bread maker at home you can put it to good use with our bread machine pizza dough recipe. Who said you need a pizza oven to make pizza?!

Not got a breadmaker at home? This best-selling model by Russell Hobbs has over 3000 positive reviews – see more details here at Amazon.

Gluten free and wondering whether you can still have pizza? You can! Did you know that you can make a pizza base using cauliflower? Follow our cauliflower crust pizza recipe here – great for a low-carb option, too.

For quick and easy pizza making, you can always use a pre-made base – we promise it'll taste just as good!

Don't fancy a traditional pizza base? There are plenty of other things you can use to make your 'pizza'. Why not try using a pitta bread or a tortilla? Naan bread and flatbread will also work well – or throw in a wildcard and use puff pastry!

Then just slather your chosen base in tomato puree, and you're ready to add your toppings! Or opt for BBQ sauce or sweet chilli sauce for a fun variation.

Classic vegetarian pizza combos

Of course, there are no rules when it comes to which toppings you put on your pizza. Still, you might prefer to take inspiration from some classic vegetarian pizza combinations. You can try...

  • Cheese and tomato pizza, aka Margherita (traditionally made with tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella and basil leaves). Follow our basic cheese and tomato pizza recipe here.
  • Roasted Mediterranean veg. Follow our roasted veg pizza recipe here, using peppers, aubergine and red onion.
  • Spinach and ricotta is another classic combo – simple and tasty!
  • Four-cheese pizza aka quattro formaggi – made using tomato sauce, mozzarella, gorgonzola, Parmigiano Reggiano, and goats' cheese.
  • Marinara pizza. This one doesn't use cheese, so it's suitable for vegans, or any veggies who aren't big cheese fans. Instead, it's made with tomato sauce, or chopped canned tomatoes, and sliced or minced garlic, with some oregano sprinkled on top if you fancy it.
  • Mushroom pizza. Pretty much the same as a Margherita, but with some mushrooms added too! Great if you want to encourage kids to eat mushrooms, too. Follow our homemade mushroom pizza recipe here.

Vegetarian pizza ingredient inspiration

Pretty much any cheese or veggie you can think of can go on a pizza! You've got total free rein, so go ahead and take any leftover veggies you've got lying in the fridge and whack them onto a pizza base. Plus, it's a great way to sneak extra vegetables into kids' food (and hopefully they won't realise!).

Some cheeses and vegetables that go particularly well on a veggie pizza include:

  • Tomatoes (also sun-dried tomatoes)
  • Cheese (mozzarella, ricotta, parmesan, goats' cheese, burrata, gorgonzola, Parmigiano Reggiano and halloumi work well)
  • Mushrooms
  • Peppers
  • Olives
  • Basil
  • Spinach
  • Rocket
  • Red onion
  • Aubergine
  • Artichoke
  • Capers
  • Broccoli
  • Courgette
  • Sweetcorn
  • Pineapple
  • Spring onion
  • Kale
  • Fennel
  • Radishes
  • Pesto
