  • Cooking Time 50 mins
  • 2 pork steaks (trimmed of fat and diced)
  • ½ small onion, finely chopped
  • ½ small swede, diced
  • 2 small carrots, diced
  • 3 small new potatoes, diced
  • 3 broccoli florets
  • 1 small eating apple (peeled and sliced)

  1. Gently fry the onions for a few minutes in a little oil before adding the pork steaks and browning
  2. Add the swede, carrot, potato and apple and mix well
  3. Leave to cook gently for a couple of minutes
  4. Crumble over the stock cube and mixed herbs then add enough boiling water to cover the ingredients (you can add more as you go on)
  5. Bring to the boil then reduce to a simmer and add the broccoli
  6. Stir in the apple sauce and mix well
  7. Leave to simmer for 30 minutes, until the veggies are soft and meat is tender
  8. Puree to desired consistency

Tips

This pork and apple casserole dish is a great weaning recipe for toddlers. A good balanced meal of meat and vegetables that can feed all the family and be easily pureed for a tasty toddler meal.

If you're doing baby-led weaning though, feel free to skip step 8. Babies from 6 months can enjoy this without blending, as long as the meat and veg are thoroughly cooked and soft enough for them to gum.

If you do prefer to puree it, you may like to make it smooth at first, then gradually blend it less each time you make it, until you're just mashing it and keeping lots of lumps in. This will help your baby learn to like new textures, and develop the muscles in their mouth and jaw.

I left this quite lumpy as the mixture was wet. 8 month old adored it! And so did the adults! :) definitely a regular meal at our table now.

I made this but I used fresh apple instead of apple sauce and the outcome is YUMMY!! My picky 14-months old loved it. I am not a good baby food cook but this recipe made me so proud. Thanks for sharing.

We had this for dinner tonight. So easy to make and very tasty. My 1 year old daughter and 6 year old son cleared their plates and wanted more! I made it in a wok rather than pan which worked well. Would Definately do this again.

    Can this be frozen?

Yes - it is better just with apples and no baby stock cube - cheaper too!
