This recipe is such a simple way of cooking a ham joint...

  • Prep Time 10 mins
  • Cook Time 8 hrs
  • Serves 4
  • Difficulty Level Easy

Preparation

  • Total Time 8 hrs 10 mins
  • Preparation Time 10 mins
  • Cooking Time 8 hrs
  • 750g gammon joint (or bacon)
  • black peppercorns (about 10)
  • 4 cloves
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tbsp golden syrup
  • 750ml boiling water
  • 250ml apple juice
  1. Lay a piece of kitchen foil in the base of the slow cooker basin to help lifting out the ham at the end of cooking
  2. Place the gammon in the basin and add the spices
  3. Mix the syrup with the boiling water and apple juice, then pour over the gammon
  4. Place the lid on tightly and cook on LOW for 8–10 hours or cook on HIGH for 5-6 hours
  5. The gammon will be beautifully tender
  6. Lift it out of the slow cooker, using the foil to help, and drain before slicing
  7. Serve hot or cold

You will need

Slow cooker - We love this one from Crock-Pot as it features a handy digital timer as well as a 4.7 Litre ceramic bowl. You can get it at Amazon for £45.

Tips

If you prefer completely plain ham, you can cook the joint in just water, or even as it is with no liquid, for the times above. Or rub some brown sugar or honey on the joint before roasting to add just a touch of sweetness.

Variations

This recipe saves a fortune in buying prepacked sliced ham and can be sliced thickly and used in other dishes or served as a gammon slice with pineapple.

Really lovely but I think the cloves over power so I didn't add those or the syrup. I have to agree everyone should make this it saves a fortune on sliced meat

I did this as they said in the recipe and then when the ham was a little cool I took the skin off did a criss cross pattern and covered it in mustard and brown sugar baked it in the over for 300 minutes at 200c and it was a real hit with all the family.

Although listed as easy there is a MUCH easier way to do this. Get the ham/gammon. Unwrap it. Put it in slow cooker on low for 8 hours. Why overcomplicate, the meat is already very tasty and you have saved time and energy!
