You'll need:

  • Plain black top
  • 2m red tulle
  • Red and black felt
  • Dark skirt (a school skirt will work fine)
  • 2m black tulle
  • 1 pack of playing cards

Five easy steps

1. Cut out heart shapes approx 6 cm wide from the black and red felt. You'll need 8-10 of each. Sew or stick a red heart onto each sleeve of the black top.

2. Glue playing cards around the neckline of the top.

3. While they're wearing the dark skirt, wrap the red tulle around your child's waist to form the overskirt and tuck into the waist of the skirt. Use the black tulle to make a top layer as shown. Safety pin or sew to the skirt underneath. Then sew or glue the opposite-coloured hearts onto the red and black layers.

4. Add white gloves, patterned tights and a top hat hairband if you have them.

5. This is the really fiddly bit so only attempt if you are a seasoned crafter. Make a sash out of thin card or fabric, and sew or glue playing cards to it. Attach at the shoulders with a quick stitch.
