Parents who have lost a child are being asked to speak about their experience, in an attempt to break the taboo, for Baby Loss Awareness Week.

A new global campaign called Wave of Light (#waveoflight), has been set up by Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, to remember all the babies that have passed away.

The charity is asking parents to light a candle at 7pm on the 15th October and to leave it burning for an hour, to remember their little one.

Sands is also encouraging parents to upload a picture of their burning candle to social media, along with the hashtag #waveoflight, to raise awareness of baby loss across the world.

A total of 24 charities now take part in the Baby Loss Awareness Week, which starts on 9th October and ends with the international Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, on October 15.

Dr Clea Harmer, the Chief Executive of Sands, has said:

Now in its 15th year, we hope that this week will help families feel less isolated and alone by giving them the opportunity to join with others and remember their babies, whether it be in public or private, across the world.

Other activities will also be taking place throughout the week, such as and bereaved parents sharing their own experiences and thanking people who helped them after their loss.

Sands is hoping that this will help raise awareness of baby loss, and encourage others to speak openly about the issue.

They are inviting people to wear a Baby Loss pin, which can be bought here.
