The radio presenter and mum of three shared how Amanda Holden helped her through her first miscarriage and why she thinks it's so important to speak about baby loss.

Coping with miscarriage

Myleene Klass has spoken openly about suffering four miscarriages in the past – including losing her fourth baby while she was on air presenting her radio show.

And the presenter, who is mum to Ava, 13, Hero, 9, ‘rainbow baby’ Apollo, 16 months, and stepmum to partner Simon Motson’s two children, told Netmums' Sweat, Snot & Tears podcast why she thinks it’s so important to speak about these things.

Talking about an Instagram post she shared on national babyloss-miscarriage day on 15 October last year, she said:

'There were a lot of people talking about infant loss and I took so much strength from them I thought maybe it was my time to speak up and help someone else. It would have been the story that I needed to hear.'

The post detailed her four losses and Myleene wrote how she hoped her sharing would help others. She wrote:

‘I know after my own MC's how I scoured the internet for stories similar to mine for peace, reassurance. I hope this helps even one lost soul.’

She told podcast hosts Annie O’Leary and Wendy Golledge that it’s important for people to know they’re not alone when going through baby loss, saying:

'The first miscarriage I suffered was such a shock that I couldn’t even imagine the level of pain you could go to to have a second. And then to have a third and then a fourth on top of that …

'It’s a world of pain that is unimaginable and I don’t think it ever goes away as such but it’s definitely something that we’re not alone in.

'And when you speak up about it your other girlfriends come forward and say, yes, this happened to me. And you just have no idea and then I though well why don’t we speak about it, why do we feel ashamed about it?'

One of the girlfriends who was able to help Myleene through the trauma of her first miscarriage was TV presenter Amanda Holden, whose son Theo was stillborn in 2011.

'I found that when I had my first miscarriage all I ever did was Google other women who it had also happened to,' said Myleene.

'I’m very grateful to the women who came forward to help me. I rang Amanda Holden and I said I need to find somebody that can help me.

'She gave me her midwife’s phone number, and as a result this was the woman who held my hand all the way through it, she was phenomenal. But I’m very respectful that in order to have had that lady in my life it’s a result of what Amanda went through.'

Myleene also spoke about the response she'd had from others when speaking out. She said that 99% of respondents were women saying, thank you, it happened to me. However not everyone felt it was something that should be discussed:

'Some people were saying this is something you shouldn’t be speaking about because it’s very private,' she said.

'Which makes me think we should be speaking about it more.

'Why do we find these topics difficult to discuss when it could be helping your daughter, it could be helping your sister, it could be helping you? But we don’t think twice about talking about bodies in a sexual way.'

Ultimately she hopes that talking about miscarriage will help other women but also her daughters.

She said:

'I’m hoping that maybe in 15 or 20 years time, my own daughters will turn around and say I remember what my mum went through and my mum's friends went through and how they spoke up and we don’t have to experience that pressure now because of them.'
