COVID vaccination in pregnancy - why it's a must

Boris Johnson has reportedly given up alcohol while his wife Carrie is pregnant.

The prime minister’s act of solidarity with his wife, who is carrying the couple's second child, means he won’t have a drink until Christmas.

While Carrie has stopped drinking in line with government advice for pregnant women, Boris will also go tee-total temporarily until the child is born.

The couple announced they were expecting a second child last month, with Carrie posting a sweet photo of a Christmas decoration in the shape of a baby’s pram at the time.

She also revealed the sad news that she’d previously suffered a miscarriage, writing:

‘At the beginning of the year, I had a miscarriage which left me heartbroken. I feel incredibly blessed to be pregnant again but I've also felt like a bag of nerves.’

The prime minister is not the first high-profile person to give up alcohol while their partner was pregnant.

Prince Harry also reportedly gave up alcohol when Meghan was pregnant with Archie.

It is said that he also gave up caffeine while awaiting the birth of the couple’s first child.

And actor Russell Crowe also quit the booze when his wife, Danielle Spencer, was pregnant with their first child, Charles.

NHS advice says that 'if you're pregnant or planning to become pregnant, the safest approach is not to drink alcohol at all to keep risks to your baby to a minimum.

'Drinking in pregnancy can lead to long-term harm to the baby, with the more you drink, the greater the risk.'

It explains that:

'Drinking heavily throughout pregnancy can cause your baby to develop a serious condition called foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS).

Symptoms include:

  • poor growth
  • distinct facial features
  • learning and behavioural problems

Would your partner give up booze for you?

We asked other you in our forum whether your partners had given up alcohol, or made any other changes while they were pregnant, and it seems that you've also had partners who’ve quit the booze while you were expecting.

Cheryl R said:

‘I jokingly bet my other half that he couldn’t give up alcohol for the next 7.5 months until the baby arrives and he said he would!

‘So we have agreed on Christmas Day and Hogmanay as being 2 exception dates where he could have a couple of beers along with everyone else, as let’s face it if I wasn’t pregnant I would have been having a couple too.

‘But without those two dates, if he fails by touching any alcohol until baby is born then he has to give me £200 to spend on myself and my babies ☺️.’

Sounds like a great plan!

Others took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the PM’s plan.

‘Nice gesture, I suppose, but pretty low on what should be the male priority list for pregnancy,’ one wrote. ‘Male partners should just be prepared and supportive of the huge emotional and physical toll growing another human being can take on you.’
