Substantial meal made from mainly store cupboard ingredients . This recipe could be a life saver the day before you do the food shop !

Mine looked nothing like the photo! I used the split yellow peas and it turned out like looking like Indian Dahl with cubes of bacon in it. It was delicious though, my boys turned their noses up at the sight of it and then ate all of it, empty plates all round.

It must be different from town to town. I am from Tipton an we don't use pearl barley an tbh I don't fancy it like that.

Kelly they are split yellow peas - find them with the other 'pulses' (like lentils) in your local supermarket

    what are grey peas?

Omg i love grey peas and i have been making them for years and have never used onions, so i am making them 2nite with onions, so i shall see which i like best with or without, plus grey peas r low in fat and r yummy with crusty french stick with butter, this is not low fat lol. i have grey peas on slimming world and they r free as long as u use trim the fat off the bacon first.

Me and my family have lived in the black country all our lives generations of us. I have never known pearl barley or onions put in Grey Peas and i assure you they will take longer than 2 hours to cook. they do not need stock. Just water the flavour comes from bacon and the peas.

Could one of the moderators please delete the below comment a very rude family member made using my log in when I had stepped away from my computer for a second. Apologies, it really sounds very nice. The person in question has been reprimanded.

Hi Tracy, i've been searching for a grey pea soup & bacon recipe as the last time i cooked them they were a tad hard, i think the peas were past their sell by date, because i cooked them for hours after soaking over night. My sister in law, who lives in the Black Country, adds a stepping tablet or bicarb to the soaking water, my mother in law did too, so maybe i should try that as i'm having a bonfire night party & i want my soup to be perfect. Whats your view on bicarb? dont want it to taste bicarbi! thanks :)

just tried this a couple of days ago and yum.... also i agree with debbie, and to the other 2 ladies the only thing i can say is "HOW RUDE OF YOU BOTH"

Well just saw your comment zoe a, well if you have been cooking grey peas for years then you obviously don't experiment in the cooking department. You can add loads of things to grey peas, onions, mushrooms and other veggies, plus have you not tried them curried? fab they am, just had a little curry powder and chilli - and it gives them a bit of a kick. Because we are from the blackcountry you don't have to sick to tradition when it comes to cooking. Give it a go Girl !!

I cooked this recipe and it was delicious. Thanks Tracy. I think its nice that recipies are adapted over the years. Food would become so boring if it always tated the same. The addition of pearl Barley goes really well in this dish. kay
