Tips

Kids love making fruit salad! Plus, it’s amazing what children will eat when they've made it themselves...

Turn this easy recipe into a fun activity by taking your kids shopping and letting them choose which fruits they want to eat (depending on what’s ripe and in season). When you start making the fruit salad together, encourage them to use their senses to look at, taste, smell and touch the fruits. They can look at the labels to see what country the fruits are from, too. Older kids can then help to cut the softer fruits and put them in a big bowl. Finally, they can spoon their own portion into a bowl.

To help entice the reluctant fruit eaters, why not add a dollop of vanilla ice cream on top? Yum!

Variations

Here are some classic fruit combos for you to try:

  • Different kinds of melon (watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe) with pineapple
  • Watermelon and cucumber (great for hot summer days)
  • Strawberries, raspberries and blueberries
  • Apple, kiwi and banana
  • Orange, grapes and strawberries
  • Raspberries, blackberries and blueberries

Really though, there are no rules! Just let your child pick whatever fruit is their favourite. If your kids eat fruit salad regularly, try to add a new fruit into the mix every once in a while. The more different fruits your child tries now, the more varied their diet is likely to be as they grow. Serving fruit salad as a regular pudding is a brilliant way to help your child grow up as a healthy eater.

My children made this using fresh cranberries, bananas, mango, pineapples and any other fruits they could find...they love it and got more than their 5 a day in the one bowl.

Get them to put the fruit onto kebab sticks and maybe add some marshmallows. They can even dip the fruit into melted chocolate. Not very healthy but if it gets them eating fruit!!
