Traditional shortbread biscuits - Unbelievably easy and unbelievably tasty!

  • Prep Time 15 mins
  • Cook Time 20 mins
  • Serves 6
  • Difficulty Level Easy

Preparation

  • Total Time 35 mins
  • Preparation Time 15 mins
  • Cooking Time 20 mins
  • 125g butter
  • 50g caster sugar
  • 175g plain flour
  • 1 tbsp milk
  1. Preheat oven 180'C/Gas mark 4
  2. Just rub butter, caster sugar and flour together in a big bowl (or food processor) until it looks like breadcrumbs
  3. Add a tablespoon of milk to the mixture and knead for a minute or two until it forms a smooth ball of dough then pop in the fridge for half an hour
  4. Turn onto a floured surface and roll out the dough until it's 1cm thick
  5. Cut out biscuit shapes using a biscuit cutter or an upturned cup
  6. Reshape the scraps and cut more rounds
  7. Place the biscuits on a baking tray and prick with a fork
  8. Bake for 15 minutes
  9. Leave biscuits to cool on the tray before eating!
  10. You can store them in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks, but they'll probably be eaten well before then

You will need

Food processor – this model by VonShef is very powerful and easy-to-use. It's available here at Amazon .

Biscuit cutter – we like this set of three heart-shaped cutters all in different sizes. See more details here at Wilko.

Tips

Kids will love getting their hands messy rubbing the butter, sugar and flour together, kneading the dough and using cookie cutters to make shapes. You don't have to stick to the classic shortbread shape - why not try using animal cutters or other funky shapes to make kid-friendly shortbread? The kids can even decorate it with icing when it's done.

The traditional way to serve shortbread is in triangles, just press the mixture into a round cake tin and score into wedges - you can also use a fork to press in around the edges for a pretty crimped edge

I use a different set of ingredients to yourselves It's still basically Shortbread: 1.5 lb Plain Flour 3/4 lb Butter 1 tspn Stevia that is the basic recipe You mix all ingredients in a bowl by hand until a ball of dough is made, then you roll it out and cut into required shapes or three rounds. Cook for 20 minutes at 325*F or until dry and set to the touch. You can add in ingredints like Chili & Cranberry Chocolate chips Cocoa and Orange Oil Cocoa and Mint Oil Lemon Oil and Poppy Seeds Play with the ingredients, but use the base recipe. • Guest

My first time of making shortbread - this recipe looked straightforward so thought we would try it - biscuits taste lovely!! My 5 y o helped me cut blend, roll and cut the mixture so she could be totally involved in each part. I will definitely make them again!

  • Guest

We made these few weeks ago, this recipe is very easy and so yummy. I use Tesco soft spread (2kg)- good value and good for baking. I am going to make double now and get my toddler to cut out biscut shapes.

  • Mrs S(48)

i use stork and it doesnt affect the taste/texture in anyway

  • Guest

No, I use whatever is on offer.

  • Guest

does it matter if its salted or unsalted butter??

  • Guest

These shortbreads are so easy to make, even for young children although a little messy! And they are soooo yummy too! :)

  • Guest

  • Guest

    These were soooo tasty!

  • Guest

So simple but amazing I used unsalted butter and mixed in a food blender not sure if this was what made the difference but they were yummy.

  • Guest

These were a fab way to make on a snowy afternoon! Just made them with my 2.5 and 6.5 year old DDs and they've turned out fab. They needed very little help (just with measuring, them pretty much mixed them themselves). Havent tasted yet but they smell amazing!

  • alicia r(11)

  • Diana S(4)

Have made these a couple of times, really good recipie, even made them for my sons school open day as everyone had to bring something in and they went quickly. I have adapted the recipie slightly by adding grated rind of 1 lemon and a couple of drops of natural vanilla extract instead of the milk and turned out really well.

  • Guest

made these the other day and they turned out great. very easy to make with daughter

  • Mrs S(48)

just made these with my almost 2 year old and have to say i am quite impressed with how they have turned out as i am not a great baker (fairy cakes is my limit lol) we have covered them in white chocolate (naughty mummy i know) and different coloured sprinkles so they look quite cool and are also tasty.

  • Guest

Made these today - yummy and so easy. My oh and dd have nearly finished them already!

  • kerri m(17)

This is a fab recipe, makes me appear as if i can actually cook! Have amazed friends and family when i've baked these! For some reason i find they start going brown once taken out the oven, but if i sprinkle with sugar instantly they remain perfect, no idea why! very yummy and easy to make with my 3yr old

  • Charlotte H(444)

my very first attempt at making any sort of biscuits and they are scrummy. so easy to make and smell absolutely divine when baking mmmm :)

  • Guest

This makes lovely biscuits. There are never any left for freezing.

  • Guest

Just made these with my 3 year old. Really easy and this recipe made 2 trays full, which was more than I thought! We topped them with smarties. Very tasty, will definitely make again. I only put them in the oven for 10 minutes, took them out just as the edges were browning & that's perfect for me!

  • Guest

just made these plus the fairy cake recipe with my 5 year old son, they turned out great and he had loads of fun covering them in melted chocolate and smarties!!! one thing i would lift the shortbread out few minutes early before they go to brown as some where abit hard.

  • Guest

Made these with my 3 yr old, I doubled the ingredients to make more as they don't last long, we added choc chips and cut into stars, xmas trees and stockings which will make nice gifts, they are yummy. If you take them out of the oven once lightly golden (slightly soft to the touch) they do harden when cooling.

  • Guest

made these with my 18 month old little girl and she loved helping me make them. She loved eating them even more and even took to helping herself to them in the cupboard after she'd watched where i'd put them...little madam lol :o)

  • Guest

Mine were a little hard, will try again sometime

  • Stacey C(90)

Just tried this with my 2 year old, she wouldnt help to mix it, but enjoyed cutting the shapes out, we sprinkled with a little sugar before popping in the oven, and now they are cooked, she cant get enough of them! Thanks for the recipe!

  • Guest

MKnim, just made these with my 3 year old son, very easy to make, lots of fun for him cutting them out and very yummy, will try them with raisins or Choc chips next time.

  • Guest

Wow! I made these with my 3 year old Daughter..they tasted great and really easy to make..we just added choc. chips because i thought they would be a bit taste less without them! xx

  • Guest

I've just made these with chocolate chips for a school sale. I imagine they'd be a bit tasteless without the chocolate. The recipe worked well, the consistency of the dough was perfect after being in the fridge. I just needed some extra flour for rolling. They cut well with a shaped cutter.

  • Guest

  • Guest

Made these today with my 5 yr old really easy to do (needed more milk though).Just put them on the christmas tree as decorations as my 9 yr old has a allergy to the chocolate ones.

  • Guest

Made these today with my 2.5 year old son, although really easy to do, I was a bit concerned at first as my mixture was really squidgy and wet, not as described in the recipe! However after being in the fridge we were still able to make shapes with biscuit cutters and they cooked really well (altho took longer than stated!) and tasted fantastic!

  • Guest

me and my little girl (age 15 months) have just made the biscuits today they are great if you are just getting started with your little one and she loved it, they taste great to, we cant wait to bake again

  • Guest

Just made these with my 3 year old son and he's already eaten some before they completely cooled! Scrummy yummy, will definately be making them again.

  • Guest

Try using part rice flour, part plain flour you can use less sugar. Omit the milk, mix the flour, sugar and butter then press onto a shallow baking tray. When golden, remove from oven and using a biscuit cutter cut into circles / squares shape of your choice. When cooled remove from tray and store in airtight container.

  • Guest

Very easy to make. I used a food processor and tried putting in the milk but it wouldn't form a dough until I used my hands but by that time I'd added 3+ tbsp of milk. It was a bit sticky to roll out but me and my nearly 3 year managed to cut biscuit shapes still and they are very yummy!

  • Guest

Made these 2day with DD whose 3.Can't believe they turned out(i'm rubbish @ cooking)Don't know who had the most fun & they taste great.

  • Guest

we didn't have caster sugar, so used demerara-abit crunchier but very tasty.

  • Guest

i tried this recipe but it wasn't shortbread that i tasted before so i made again but replace milk with 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract- turned out yummy! needed longer than 15 mins but i made a round one in a small sponge tin instead.

  • dawn w(23)

  • Guest

I made these today with my 2 and a half year old. She was so chuffed, as these biscuits are so easy to make she did most of the work and felt like she made them all by herself. She ate the end product which is unusual for her & hubby loved them too. Will definatly be making them again as they are really yummy & buttery! Yvette

  • Guest

Really easy recipe as a Scot it met out shortbread standards lol Try this basic biscuit/cookie recipe. 225g Butter, at room temperature 110g caster sugar 275g plain flour ground spices, or finely grated zest or bascally anything you want to add. Preheat oven at 170 Cream the butter add the sugar beat til it's pale and fluffy. Sift in the flour and add whatever spices etc mix til it forms a firm dough Roll into walnut sized balls place on baking tray slightly apart flatten with damp spoon bake for 13-15 mins Leave to cool on a wire rack

  • Guest

if u dont have cutter then roll it in to a sausage and cut in to 1cm slices, another idea is after they have cooked & cooled dip half in to melted choc and allow to set....yum

  • Guest

Hi Natasha - sounds like the oven temperature might of been a bit too high and they got slightly burnt on the edges & bottom before they were done. Next time, try them on a lower temp.

  • Guest

Mine went dark brown at edges and bottom of biscuit! How do you get an even colour? Help!

  • Guest

I add 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence too

  • Guest

Me and son have a great time making them and my partner has a great time eating them. Very rarely last a fornight. Good fun both make and eating.

Thanks, this is a great recipe, made this with 3 year old DD, easy and turned out delicious. Added a bit of vanilla essence which gave them a lovely flavour. I needed to bake them for a bit longer than 15 mins but my oven does tend to be a bit slow.

  • Guest

  • Guest

Really easy to make (even for me and my 3 yr old)! We put melted chocolate + white chocolate stars on top, yumm.

These are really great!! Iv made them twice now and the second time i added some cocoa! This time im going to add some vanilla aswell. My kids love them and my partner,he even took them to work and his boss tried them!!To the person above, use flour on rolling pin and work top. Many thanks for a brill recipe,il never go back to buying biscuits again =)

  • Guest

I just made these and they taste great! I did find the dough quite sticky though and it broke easily when rolling, even though I'd greased the rolling pin and counter. Maybe it was because I used 'spreadable butter'. In the end, it doesn't matter, because they are delicious!

  • Guest

i have the recipe for this taped to the inside of my kitchen cupboard but have made it sooo many times now i know it off by heart!! it is so easy and u can cut out any shape u want/ice them for a special occasion!! i used to buy biscuits for my toddler-not anymore!! we love them!!!

I must say they are delicious and I was very pleasantly surprised. My 3 year old loved them too. My husband is now making another batch with help from our 3 year old.

  • Guest

Got to agree these are so easy to make and delicious. I sprinkled them with caster sugar when they were still warm.

  • Guest

Lovely Jubbly!! Made these with the kids today....doubled the receipe and added chocolate chips to one half of the dough so have plain and choc chip shortbread. Nearly all gone so a definite hit!!

  • Guest

Would be better if you included gas temperature. I assume that 180 in electric is anything from gas mark 3-5!!!

  • Guest

I made these as end-of-school-year gifts for my daughter's teachers. I used a small heart-shaped cutter and presented them in a cellophane bag tied with ribbon. They were quick, easy and delicious and saved my life as I made them late at night with store cupboard ingredients!

  • Guest

I've just made these with my 3.5 year old and although I had to mix plain & self raising flour as I ran out of plain & had a bit of a wrestle with quantites as my scales only do imperial, they were fab! We've just tasted them & my son ate the whole thing & he's not usually a biscuit fan. It's so nice to have a recipe we can use where he'll eat the end result! Thank you!!!

  • Guest

Made these for the cake stall at the local village fete. I'm a total novice so was a bit worried that my efforts wouldn't come up to scratch, but all I can say is that they sold the lot. Probably could have done with cooking a little longer but that's a case of learning my oven! My daughter loved them and enjoyed making them with me - we've been doing lots of baking together since, getting a little more adventurous each time. Nice easy recipe to get started with.

  • Guest

We have used this recipe twice in the space of 3 days. They are really easy and taste delicious.
