My soon to be ex husband

had an affair, he left the family home.

My teenagers would not speak to him at first.

now I have met someone else, the kids don't like it and have gone to live with him at their grandparents home.

I do not see my 2 children at all, but my son has stayed with me, they are clearly being brainwashed by him and his family members, he's clearly buying them anyway he has contacted the CSA and I have to pay £200 a month for both the girls. I am on a low income and he earns triple the amount I do, he earns approx £47k a year and I £16K I'm contributing towards the mortgage and so is he, however I can not afford to feed myself and my son, and with the increased rise gas and electricity bills, its become a big worry and I can't afford the basic monthly bills.

does anyone know much about the CSA and if I can appeal this decision ?

Thank you.

Hi there

Go online and use the government calculator to get an idea of what you should be paying.

https://www.gov.uk/calculate-child-maintenance

They may ask to see 3 month’s of payslips before making the calculation.

Have you spoken to the child maintenance people directly or how were you informed of the £200?

They will take into account the child you have living with you but it’s based on your gross income and they do not consider debt, living costs etc

Also - as far as I know his income will not be means tested

Thank you for your reply, I guess I will have to reduce how much money I pay towards the mortgage each month by 200.00 if he doesn’t pay the extra, the mortgage payments will default and the house will have to be repossessed, as he can’t evict me and his son.

Have you chatted through the mortgage issue with him? Presumably he’s aware of your financial position?

I’ll probably be berated for saying this and I’m not trying to be nasty or on my high horse but moving on from this particular house might not be a bad thing. If you’re so thinly stretched that you can’t make your £200 payment each month without going under then it sounds like you’re already under severe financial strain. The first time something major goes bust in the house you could find yourself struggling to fix it (assuming that you don’t have savings)

Easier said than done but the job market is booming is there anyway you could maybe find a better paid job to take the pressure off a bit? Also eBay the life out of everything you own - I found myself doing this a few years back and even if you made £200 that would at least be one month of payment and could give you a bit of breathing space.

The harsh reality is that the CSM don’t give a fiddler’s about your mortgage etc they are just civil service workers paid to organise and chase payment.

I totally understand what you are saying, I can’t move out the house because to rent would cost at least 6 to 8 hundred a month and I’m paying 550 at the moment.

the house is apparently sold, but is taking to long to go through.

I have found a new property with a low mortgage of 280 a month, I just need the equity from this one, I’m just struggling through this interim period.

he”s not approachable to talk about my financial position.

just before he left he said I’m nothing without him and I guess he’s right.

No he is not right - what a rubbish thing to say to you. You said it yourself you’re just struggling through this initial transition phase. I bet in a year or 2 from now you’ll be out the other side stronger and happier. Stick in there and hopefully the grass won’t be greener for your kids and they’ll come home xx

I really hope so, if it wasn’t for my family I would be in such a mess.

on a positive note I got accepted for a mortgage this morning, so hopefully another step closer to freedom ! 😊
