You will need

You will need:

Saucepan - We really like this heavy-duty aluminium saucepan that features enamel coating and non-slip handle. Find it at Amazon.

Cake cases - Opt for these bright colourful ones that are a guaranteed hit with little ones. You can get this multi-pack of 300 at Amazon.

Tips

These are so easy to make, and the perfect recipe for cooking with kids. If you'd like to get the whole family involved, kids can help by stirring the chocolate through the rice krispies (just make sure it's not too hot first), and spooning the mixture into the cake cases. Plus everyone's favourite: licking the spoon when you're done!

If you're melting the chocolate on the hob, place a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water (ensuring the bottom of the bowl doesn't touch the water). Chop the chocolate into chunks, pop it in the bowl, and stir until fully melted.

If you're melting the chocolate in the microwave, heat it on high for 30 seconds at a time, stirring between blasts, until it's all melted.

How long the cakes will take to set depends how big they are. As a general rule, small cakes will take about an hour or two, while a large traybake is best left in the fridge overnight.

The finished cakes will keep in an airtight container for 2-3 days (if you can resist eating them for that long!).

Variations

  • Use cornflakes or any other cereal if you don't have rice krispies. Shredded Wheat makes super realistic Easter nests! Why not experiment with whatever cereal is in your cupboard and see what you can create?
  • Milk chocolate makes the most classic rice krispie cakes, but you could also try dark chocolate or white chocolate to mix things up a bit.
  • If you'd prefer a chocolate-free version, check out our rice krispie cakes made with golden syrup. You can make them with melted marshmallows, too!
  • To turn these into an extra decadent treat, add whatever kind of extras you'd like! Mini eggs or bits of broken Easter egg make great additions for Easter treats (though bear in mind that Cadbury Mini Eggs aren't suitable for children under 4 years). But you can add whatever you'd like: chopped up bits of chocolate bars, gummy worms, fresh or dried fruit, nuts, sprinkles... The only limit is your imagination!

I made these over Easter with my little girl, she's only 2 so we're starting off with easy items. I didn't have golden syrup in but butter worked just as well and they tasted delicious

Melting the chocolate in microwave - much easier then in the pan (we have tried both). Otherwise I can recommend this to anyone with a lively toddler. Keeps them busy just long enough but not too long.

Excellent easy preschooler and toddler friendly recipe. Both loved mixing (and tasting!) the recipe. We omitted the coconut as were not fans but put raisins in for a bit of chew. Then decorated with Smarties; a fun weekend treat for us all!

These are awesome for children right from a a little under 2 years to actually mix pour spoon all alone, sure the mess is a bit but it helps their next steps in the process of the joy of creating their own product and an after school snack!! Very economic too.

These are always a winner as an easy way to make a tasty treat for my little one and her friend when she's round. No cooking involved either so I know they can make them without my help & they're safe. We made these Easter egg chocolate crispies which went down well. The syrup isn't needed but adds that extra special taste. 5 stars

Perfect for making with children and go down a treat at parties (well any time really!) We made ours with half dark chocolate and half milk chocolate (both from Lidl) and added raisins instead of coconut - they tasted totally delicious.

We made these with any chocolate we could find in the house and as commented above, we used mini marshmallows that we had left over from a Christmas recipe!! Such an easy yet exciting recipe to make for the younger kids. They love it as it is chocolate and doesn't take long to make!

I find that good chocolate doesn't always melt well for Crispy cakes (I think it was a Galaxy I used which was useless) & a good cooking chocolate is better & cheaper too (I usually use Tescos or Sainsbury's own)

we have just made these, used all the chocolate in the house since Christmas! We added a whole jar of mini marshmellows my daughter got for her birthday. Delicious and so simple.

Brilliant & super easy to do!! We put rainbow sprinkles in ours today!! :-)

If making at Easter use shredded wheat and put a couple of mini eggs in the top for a mini nest!
