A delicious recipe the whole family will love... A cook from our local school provided me with a breakdown of the recipe for chocolate concrete cake which we all loved at school. Great with pink custard or on it's own.

  • 1 egg
  • 25g cocoa powder
  • 225g self raising flour

  3. Add the flour and cocoa and mix well until you have a stiff consistency
  4. Beat the egg and gently mix into the flour mixture
  5. Put the mixture into a greased 30cm x 18cm (12" x 7") baking tray, gently press into the corners and flatten into the tin
  6. Sprinkle with a little water and place in the top half of the oven for 35 minutes
  7. Remove from oven and sprinkle with sugar
  8. Allow to cool for 5 minutes then cut into required size pieces and place on a wire tray

Tips

The mixture will be very stiff, don't worry, that's right!

Variations

For a true nostalgic experience, why not serve with chocolate custard?

I haven't tried this yet - can someone please let me know, is it salted or unsalted butter? I usually use unsalted in cakes but this doesn't say. Thank you It wouldn't let me submit without a rating, so I've gone for the middle three stars but ignore that, as I can't rate it until I've tried it :)

I wasn't sure I'd followed the recipe correctly as the mixture before baking is not cake like at all. It's quite clumpy. However, once baked I realised it had worked well. A really nice (and simple) cake to make. Minimum prep and tastes nice. Basic but nice.

I loved this at school and tried many recipes for it but this is definitely the best. I have tweaked it a bit, I cream the butter and sugar as recommended from a previous comment. I also added a little milk so the mix was less thick and then only cooked it for 30 mins on 150. It turns out less dry and really delicious.

Really was just how i remembered it. I am not a baker but after making this I feel like a pro. Ha. I added 2 eggs so it wasn't really dry and don't forget the water on top. It makes a nice crunch topping. I felt worried with the lack of chocolate powder going in. in case it didn't taste of chocolate but the ingredients and amounts really work! Will make this in our family Xmas hampers thank you. X

I am a school cook and still make this. I cream the sugar and butter together rather than melt it. Also wet the top of the cake before you put it in the oven, this gives it a crunchy top ☺

This was perfect! Thanks so much! I've been wondering how to treat my kids to this for a while! I had to cook mine for a lot less though, it was overdone at that temp for that time. I took it out at half an hour as the edges were getting burnt. The second time I baked it for 20mins and it was so much better, not as hard, melted in the mouth and no burnt bits! I had found another recipe and it was as ShonaF(71) says. I tried this yesterday and it was gross!!!! Extremely dry, sugary, rock hard yet very crummy. It was like eating a sugar lump, not how I remember it to be. This recipe of yours is correct for our tastes, just adjust your cooking time to your oven.

I made the mistake of making this, putting it in the oven and then reading the comments below. I thought it was going to be a disaster! But I was really pleasantly surprised! It had a lovely crunchy top and a lovely soft texture underneath. Yes it was more cake than concrete like but lovely all the same! Will defo make again x

The actual recipe for chocolate concrete is 200g plain flour 200g sugar 50g cocoa and 100g of butter. Put your dry ingredients in a mixing bowl. Melt the butter either in the microwave or on the hob add the melted butter to the dry ingredients and combined with your hands until it is a crumbly mixture. Put it in a baking tray pat down and bakeep in the oven for 20min at gas mark 4/180. It's perfect and so easy to make :D

    fab recipe!

  • Guest

I wouldn't even attempt it. Made it word for word with my daughter, and it turned out like a rock hard chocolate cake. Not remotely like chocolate concrete at all. Literally a chocolate cake that had been left in a tin for three weeks. What a waste of ingredients.

Yum! Loved this so much at school, will definitely have to try it. Thanks so much. Agree with Rachel though, don't think I'll bother with the pink custard!

  • Guest

If you serving the concrete freshly cooked, warm or with custard you can omit the egg, but it does become very hard when cooled and left so if you wish to eat it over a few days it is better to use the egg to prevent it becoming too hard!

  • Guest

Bleuh will give pink custard a VERY wide berth :)

  • Guest

Used to hav this at school, blast from the past, thank you! Looking forward to making it :-)

  • Guest

MIne turned out more like a cake, i've spoken to a cook and she says the recipe it's basically chocolate shortbread but cooked for longer. You don't use egg.

  • Guest

Oh wow if this turns out like the one i used to get at Moffats school i will be an unbelievably happy bunny!!!! To those who are worried as their cake was hard on top ..... it is supposed to be hence the concrete.... at school it was hard enough to bend the spoons and one bit did once ping off so hard that it hit a teacher.... but they did serve it a bit softer underneath after that....

  • Guest

Hiya, Sometime I use a deeper and slightly smaller dish or maybe adjust the temp or cooking time depending on the type of oven you use. The amount of sugar involved is shocking for any sweet toothed person. The recipe conversion for the margerine or butter should have read 5 and a half ounces....I have a very old word package on our pc and it does not make the numbers smaller for half, so sorry ladies for confusion. Very glad you have tried and tested it though, well impressed. Memories

  • Guest

  • Guest

i made this today very nice it didnt come out very thick thought any tips on making it thicker i made to batches of it :)

  • Guest

I tried this recipe with the kids, but must have gone wrong somewhere, the top was really hard and horrible.

  • Guest

I made this today and its lovely :D yum.....

  • Guest

Davina, Mine turned out like that one time when I used a deeper and smaller baking tray. I would say that either the tray you used was too small/deep, or you didn't cook it for long enough.

  • Guest

I made this recently but it didn`t turn out right ,was hard on top but not underneath. After i`d melted margarine and mixed with sugar i removed from heat and added rest of ingredients ,was this where i went wrong ?
