Deliciously chewy and chocolatey!

Preparation

  • Total Time 25 mins
  • Preparation Time 15 mins
  • Cooking Time 10 mins
  • 100g butter, softened
  • 100g brown sugar, softened
  • 1 tbsp golden syrup
  • 150g self raising flour
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
  • 50g chocolate chips
  1. Preheat the oven to 170'C/160'C fan/Gas mark 3

  3. Mix in the flour, vanilla extract and add the chocolate chips
  4. Divide the mixture into about 15 pieces and roll into balls using your hands

  6. Bake for about 10 minutes until a pale golden colour
  7. Leave to cool on the tray for a few minutes and then remove from the tray and finish cooling on a wire rack

You will need

Baking sheet - This two-pack of baking mats is made of durable, flexible food-grade silicone. Plus they are also eco-friendly, can be used again and again – see more details here at Amazon.

Cooling rack - This will let your baked goods cool quicker – see more details here at Wilko.

Tips

Kids will love helping you soften the butter, combine the ingredients and form the dough into balls.

Keep a close eye on baking - if overbaked they will go crispy!

Try this delicious chocolate chip cookie recipe on its own or with any combination of raisins, chopped glace cherries, dates, dried apricots and nuts etc

They also have no egg in which isn't always the case with cookies.

Variations

  • Roll the balls of dough, freeze on a baking paper lined baking sheet until solid and then store in a freezer bag - when you want a freshly baked cookies, just pop them onto the baking sheet and cook as normal, adding 1 minute to the cookie time
  • For double chocolate cookies, replace 2 tbsp of the flour with 2 tbsp cocoa
  • Use dairy-free marg and choc chips for vegan/dairy-free cookies
  • Add Smarties or chunks of chopped dark chocolate - they are so much better than normal chips, they are also cheaper too

Excellent recipe, the cookies look great and are very tasty. I've reduced the sugar to 70grams but they are still too sweet for my family.

I was looking for a easy simple thing to cook with my 4yr old. I found this cookie recipe and decided to make it. It as great fun, she loved making them. When it came to tasting them both my 4yr old and nearly 2 yr old loved them. Next time I make them i would add a little bit less brown sugar as I found them a bit sweet.

Fab recipe! Great way to use up Easter eggs :-) we tried a second batch with cinnamon and raisins really easy to make and quick to bake!

  • Guest

    5

Really easy and really nice. I made them dairy and gluten free, and split the batch into 3 flavours: apricot and stem ginger, raisin and cinnamon and chocolate chip and vanilla. Lovely!

  • Guest

Great recipe, these worked so well. I normally tweak recipes to make them slightly healthier so i made my own variations- I used 70g of sugar and 30g of syrup, and I used 2/3 sr flour and 1/3 spelt flour. I added a tablespoon of milled flaxseed and used white and dark chocolate chunks. Delicious, thank you!

Since I first made these after receiving the email mentioning them from Netmums AGES ago (or so it feels), I have made them countless times. The other half likes them so much he makes them too. This isn't to say that he doesn't do his share of time in the kitchen, it is just that this time doesn't ever, usually, involve baking. These cookies are, however, so easy that they practically bake themselves. And they are so quick that it takes longer to do the dishes afterwards than it does to go from 0 - eating. Love them. Not too crunchy, although with nice, crispy edges. Not too gooey that they feel under cooked. You can make several normal sized ones, or fewer huge ones a la Subway. Either way, they will be gone before you have had time to save any for later. This is maybe not a good thing. Haven't tried freezing the dough as there is never an occasion when I have made them and then not thought to throw them straight into the oven for (almost) instant cookie gratification.

I'm always looking for cookie recipes that don't use eggs, this one is perfect.

  • Guest

Me my 6 yr old step son and 18 mth old daughter made these this morning. They have been a huge success really easy to make and turned out great.

  • Guest

    5

I always use this recipe for basic cookies & then adapt as needed. I made Crunchy nut cornflakes ones this morning!

  • Guest

    5

This is my go-to cookie recipe. I add white chocolate and raspberries for adults and add smarties or chocolate chips for the kids. The mixture freezes well too so I often double the recipe up.

  • Guest

I really liked this recipe, it was so good and my kids loved them. I added nutella and extra flour and they where chocolaty but unfortunately I had no choc chips so I couldn't use them. They where really good and I will do them again soon!

  • Keri H(26)

I've just made these as double chocolate and oh are they delicious, nearly had a fight with my 5 year old over who gets to eat the most! Will definitely be making them again. No good for the waistline but so good for the feel good factor.

  • Lyndsay P(13)

I made these when I first went into labour and me and oh nreally appreciated them throughout!

  • Guest

I have never wrote a review on here before but these are so fantastic I couldn't not! I have made many batches of these in a few days and had lots of compliments! So easy an perfect!! Is there any way to change this recipe to include oats and raisins? Has anyone done this? Many thanks

  • Guest

    Delicious and so easy, thanks.

  • Mrs S(48)

i love this recipe and have commented on it a few times but just thought i'd day i made these today using golden caster sugar rather than soft brown sugar (as i had none in) & they are just as yummy! They come out a bit 'thinner' and i think they taste more like a certain cookie shops this way so i actually prefer them and will use it from now on

  • Guest

These freeze brilliantly so always good as a backup!

  • Guest

Just baked a batch of these, great quick recipe & taste lovely! Made with raisins but will try smarties next time!

  • Guest

These are currently cooking & looking pretty good. However, I didn't completely follow guidance, and make 12 balls instead of 15 - it's looking like 1 huge cookie haha! We've used smarties, and will be trying white choc buttons instead next time

  • Guest

Just made these with my 2 year old, really simple recipe and totally lush! Will defiantly be making them again.

  • Kaz M(10)

Laura S (772) - thanks for the mini creme egg idea! Made these cookies for the first time today, cutting mini creme eggs left over from Easter into thirds. I wrapped the cookie dough around each third of creme egg and then cooked for approx 10 minutes. Absolutely scrummy!

  • Mrs S(48)

inside a ball of cookie dough not bowl sorry and just made sure they were all covered and well spaced out

  • Mrs S(48)

Linzi i used the mini creme eggs and just put one inside a bowl of cookie dough (so they were quite big and took about 5mins longer to cook) what might work though (and what i did with the mini eggs) was to bash 2 or 3 together down into mush and just add as you would choc chips but might take a bit longer to cook or need slightly more flour added if it was too 'gloopy'

  • Guest

laura how many creme eggs did you use and at what stage did you add them?

  • Mrs S(48)

i posted about a few weeks ago saying how much we love this recipe and how we have had success with various fillings so today as an easter treat (as a change from nest cakes etc) we made mini egg cookies and they are yummy but i was then inspired to try creme egg ones and they are to die for (providing you like creme eggs that is) my hubby is bringing some in with him tonight so i can make a batch for him to take to work in the morning! Seriously whoever shared this recipe is a genius lol. I half the mixture by the way (as i just eat them all) and i get about 8 smallish size cookies from it which are still a nice size espec for my dd. Deffo best cookie recipe around!

  • steph m(40)

Im about to try this :)

  • Guest

    Makes me peckish! :) Hmmm.

  • Mrs S(48)

this recipe is so easy to follow and very yummy - my 2 year old loves making these as they are so simple for her to mix and shape - we have made them with choc/white choc chips, rasins and added some cinammon and also with fudge pieces - all delicious this is a great recipe thanks!

  • Guest

These were easy to make and my 2 year old loved them! I just added a tablespoon of milk - super light and chewy and not too sweet. Fantastic!

  • Guest

These are DELICIOUS! Very easy to make too!

  • Guest

Sophie, I think it depends on what type of butter/spread you use and possibly how generous you are with the golden syrup! Next time, flatten them a bit before you bake them and see if they turn out better.

  • Guest

I've made these twice now and they are delicious but they don't seem to expand like everyone says? Any ideas? They get a little bigger but seem to stay in a ball shape so I have to flatten them when they come out....

  • Guest

Myself & my son just made these, very easy & very delicious. Thanks for the recipe :0)

  • Guest

Hi Annette, There's never an exact science in doubling recipes unfortunately. We'd suggest you add a small amount of milk to loosen the mixture to get it to the stage where it makes a big ball.

  • Guest

Am I doing something wrong? i doubled the quantities but my mixture is very dry, have added a little more gden syrup but its still not right. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

  • Guest

I've made these quite a few times. However, my DD has recently been diagonised dairy intolerant and loves these. So I made them with dairy free marg and dairy free choc, they were lovely. She likes them and the whole family have tasted and thought they were great.

  • Guest

dont use flora as it makes them taste disgusting

  • Samantha T(139)

I made 50 of these at the start of the week....i'm about to make some more, husband took loads into work and kids and their friends demolished the rest! Definitely a recipe to memorize!!

  • Guest

Fab, just made these as an after school treat and so easy to make.

  • Guest

I tried these and put mini smarties in them, i made them smaller for little ones and got about 20 out of the mix, they are so easy to make i'll defiantly be doing them again. x

  • Guest

Just made these and they're fantastic and so so easy to make. We got 15 out of the mix and a very good size. Without little helpers it would take literally five minutes to whip up, and about 15 with helping hands. We used chocolate beans instead of chips. Will be making these again, delicious!! Watch out though - they Really expand :-)

  • Guest

I've just made these and they're delicious. I used half the ingredients and made about a dozen biscuits about the size of a rich tea biscuit. I also used left over easter egg chocolate which worked just as well as shop bought choc drops. Yummy!!!

  • Guest

Made these yesterday got 16 out of the recipie and they are all gone today they were sooooo good!! Big hit with little and big kids :c)

  • Guest

This is a faab recipe and even better if you substitute some of the flour for cocoa powder as suggested on bottom of recipe! Easy enough the kids can make them on their owwn now.

  • Guest

Just made these and have almost polished them all off! Used half the sugar and honey, also made 10 instead of 15 and flattened them after 10 mins then cooked for another 5. Really yummy and almost melt in the mouth! Shame baby is too young to enjoy them...

  • Guest

Thank you so much for this receipe it was so quick and simple to do and the kids loved making them.

  • Guest

Made these a few times now, but never remember to put less sugar in! They are very sweet- lovely, but could easily get away with at least half the amount of sugar if using the Golden Syrup. We used smarties today, let over from Easter! Next batch will have the crushed up egg in!

  • Guest

These turned out great, easy to make.

  • Guest

me and my 3 yr old daughter just mde these. made them with the golden syrup and chocolate chunks. These are the best cookies ive made. We normally make the shortbread (from netmums) but these are even better. Going to try the smarties ones next time

  • Katie F(457)

these turned out lovely will defo make again, i used broken up easter eggs instead of chocolate chips

  • Guest

Hoping these work with gluten free flour lol...have a serious sweet tooth on this rainy day

  • Guest

Just made these as a rainy day project in Easter Hols. Found them extremely easy to make and they taste yummy!! A real hit with the children!

  • Guest

Made these yesterday and hubby demolished them all for his afternoon tea! Sure to say he's on at me to make some more :)

  • Nicola R(11)

This was a really good cookie recipe, will be using again, I used honey instead of golden syrup and the kids loved them!!

  • Guest

fab recipe. Best cookies i've ever made!

  • Guest

these are so yummy ive just made two batches . first lot i followed to the recipe and 2nd lot i omitted the sugar but used carination caramel about 3 tablespoons then added white choc chics, milk choc and mini marshmellows and there just like them dominoes cookies .

  • Guest

this is a great recipe!!1 me and my kids love them we use smarties, white choc chip and milk choc chip xx

  • Guest

Honey is a good alternative to golden syrup and I've also experimented with different types of sugars depending on what I have in the cupboard. They are very sweet biscuits - I tend to make miniature ones. It freezes brilliantly. I freeze in a ball and then defrost and roll it out and add extras eg white chocolate buttons chopped up and fresh raspberries for adults cookies and I got the kids to add smarties to the rest of the mixture. They are much better underdone and chewy than overcooked and biscuity.

  • Guest

These are my husbands favourites, i make them all the time with my two year old and she loves getting her hands in and messy! Try adding Reeses pieces instead of choc chips for a lovely peanutty taste!

  • Guest

I tried lessening the sugar but it affected the chewiness! If freezing, freeze at the cookie dough ball stage and then bake from frozen x

  • Guest

Honey should be fine and you can swap around any sugar although this may affect the crunch and eating qualities of the biscuits. You can often reduce the sugar in recipes and use wholemeal flour for a healthier version.

  • Guest

i use white sugar instead of brown sugar as i found them really sweet using brown and they still come out great and also less expensive

  • Guest

    No, honey doesn't work x

  • Guest

Hi,does anybody know if i can use honey instead of golden syrup, as well as muscovado sugar rather than brown sugar

  • Guest

oohhh delicious made them last night with my little man and they are all gone all ready!! lol! definately be making them agen!! xxxx

  • Guest

Made these the other day. So quick and simple! They went down extremely well in our house but didn't last long!! Will definitely be making them again soon. Had a bag of M&Ms in the cupboard so used those insted of Smarties. Yummy!

  • Guest

Looking forward to making these! Will keep you all posted!

  • Guest

really easy to make, made them today with my 2 year old. It was nice to find a biscuit recipe that was easy for him to handle (not too sticky like some recipes). Havent eaten them yet as still cooking but looking forward to them later... with a cuppa!!!!

  • Guest

These are yummy! I've made these with my 19 month-old three times now and he loves them, as do his dad and I. They taste much better than shop-bought cookies. Thank you for the recipe.

  • caitlin o

its the first thing on the list?!

  • Guest

How much butter do you use as its not on the ingredients but it says beat the butter, everyone must of made these without using it

  • Guest

Simply the best and easiest cookie recipe ever.. these are delicious, scrumptious and so easy to make with the kids... all eaten within an hour to two!!1 I make these several times a week now and don't think shop brought ones are even close to beating them. Thanks to the maker of this recipe!!! Joanne

  • Guest

Made these today and wow! we definetly wont be buying any more shop brought cookies these are delicious, fab recipe thankyou :-)

  • Guest

I tried a recipe on another site and the recipe was far too sweet and they became so brittle and rock hard. THIS recipe was fantastic first time! they are just like bakery cookies but better because they are warm from the oven. I used chocolate chunks so much more luxurious than choc chips. THE BEST COOKIES EVER. I wont be buying from the shops again :-D

  • Guest

The first time I made these I used honey and Easter egg. Over cooked them and they didn't flatten out. Still nice to eat but hard! Did them with syrup and mini smarties this time and took them round a friends house. The 4 kids inhaled them so I think they were a success!

  • Guest

My 5yr old and I made these tonight and they were gorgeous! First time iv made biscuits and very very easy to follow.............will deffo be making these again Lx

  • Guest

  • Guest

Made these cookie yesterday, very easy to make with yummy results. Just to say that when you take them out of the oven they flatten themselves i made the mistake of leaving them in a little longer than 10 mins making them a bit crispy around the edges thinking that they had not baked properly.

  • Guest

jus tried 1 and cant stop eatin them sooooooo yummy!!!!!!

  • Guest

jus making these now look good as they cumin out the oven but i seem 2 have not devided the mixture properly i have mre than 15 n ther little lol never mind sure my 2 nearly 2yr olds will love them so easy to make and am thinking of trying to adapt it so i use rice flour so i can do them for the girls 2nd birthday party and everyone can eat them

  • Guest

I have made these twice now, once with smarties and once with choc chips. These are really nice. My Mum even said that they were just like cookies you buy from a certain cookie shop!

  • Guest

i have been making these for the past 6 months on a very regular basis- the kids love them and they are so quick and cheap to make- i have not brought cookies since. def my favourite baking recipe. thanks x

  • Guest

brilliant recipe, so quick. Finally found a egg free and dairy free recipe my 2 year old likes!!!tried with cherries as cant find dairy free choc chips.

  • Jennie W(29)

Just made this with a neighbours daughter!! Very easy to make but we put them in for 20 mins as they seemed to take ages in my cooker! Will def be making these again!

  • Guest

I made these yesterday - they are nearly all gone! O/H loves them. I`m going to make more using a little less sugar as they are a bit sweet for me.

  • Guest

This recipe is fab and easy to do with my 2 year old. We don't weigh our chocolate, we just bung in a bag of Asda choc chips or white choc chunks - mmmmmm! Also, one of my friends is delighted that it's an egg free recipe as her niece is allergic to egg and so she now has a nice treat to give her.

  • Guest

Yum Yum Yum. All gone very quickly, will definitely make them again! So quick, easy & cheap.

  • Guest

Just made a batch of these using chopped stem ginger instead of chocolate chips and they were delicious.

  • Guest

I just made these and they turned ot fab, my mixture turned out a bit wet so i just added more flour so i could roll them in to balls rather than having a big gloopy mess. susie x

  • Guest

mine didn't really spread so i have really fat but delicious cookies, any ideas why they wouldn't spread?

  • Guest

we love these cookies but changed the recipe to half the sugar, just as tasty, consistency is better and less teeth rotting!

  • Guest

Thanks for this recipe it is so good, they taste just like Millies Cookies, but a fraction of the cost. I did the double choc chip cookies so I could make them look like Christmas puddings for the school Christmas fayre. Just cover half the cookie with white icing then pipe on 2 holly leaves and 2 red berries at the top.

  • Guest

we love these cookies and i make them regularly with my 4 yr old. have tried a few variations but the double chocolate are the best. stem ginger is good using chopped stem ginger and adding syrup from the jar (you still need the golden syrup or its too dry), have also made cherry and apricot ones. all good. thank you so much. will never buy shop cookies again. all my family and friends love them and have mistaken them for shop bought ones ;) lisa w

  • Guest

My 2 year old and I made these this afternoon. I can't believe how good they are. Will definitely be trying some more recipes. As my 2 year old would say "their bulicious" x

  • Guest

I cannot believe how yummy these are and so so simple to make, i am on about my 12th batch of these now (since i discovered the recipe last week) i keep getting requests from family and friends for them, i have done double chocolate chip ones, chocolate chip, smartie ones, ones with chopped nuts and chocolate, some with chopped cherries they really are delicious.

  • Guest

Made these today and WOW so tasty although i think they may need less time in the oven (fan assisted) as they turned out crunchy all the way through ? I'm now contemplating other varieties coconut or fudge perhapes and dipping them in melted chocolate !

  • Guest

OMG these cookies are sooo yummy and easy to make, a huge hit with the whole family :0) i will defo be making these alot more often!! thanks for the recipe

  • jude r(2)

have just baked the 3rd batch of these in 2 days, so yummy they don't last! so easy to make my 2 year old does most of the making.

  • Guest

these were the easiest and best cookies ive made to date...will def be making again...

  • Guest

Where did I go wrong?! Some many great comments about these but mine were too thick! Tried flattening the second batch but they came out even worse! Any tips? I want to make them again as they were rather yummy despite being the wrong shape! Thanks in advance!

  • Guest

Just made these cookies with choc chips and cherries. My boys loved them but not as much as me. Not sure if they'll last the day. Not sure if my oven temp not right but had to cook them longer than 10 minutes. Still yummy though.

  • Guest

try these with white chocolate chips and dried strawberry pieces - you can buy them in the cookery section of the supermarket, incredibly yummy!

  • Guest

very easy to make - even for me,and so yummy !!! my daughter had a good fun with me :-)next time we will try make those with cocoa ! x

  • Guest

do you think chocolate covered raisins will bake well in these cookies? trying to kill two birds with one stone :- )

  • Guest

omg who ever invented this recipe is genius they are so scrummy me and my two year old have already made these two days in a row, so simple to make, the only problem is they dont last long

  • Guest

these are so yummy, if using an electric beater then the mix will look dry after the flour is added but its not, squeeze the mixture together into small balls and take out of the oven after 10 mins so they stay chewy, give them time to cool before transferring them, we cant get enough of them and have made them every night this week!

  • Guest

these are in the oven as I type, I was surprised the flour had to be self raising, thought it would be plain for cookies?

  • Guest

Just made these with my 4yr old daughter and they are sooooo yummy, my daughter really enjoyed rolling them into small balls. These will all be gone by the end of the day

  • Guest

i have just made loads of these cookies for a school fair.but unfortunately have to make more as family and neighbours have ate them all.lol.great recipe thank you

  • Guest

Just made these today with Pure spread (non dairy) as my one of my kids has a lactose intolerance, they've worked out really well, thanks for a fab recipe.

  • Guest

oh dear, these are too yummy, and so easy to make

  • Guest

I made this today and put a spoonful of peanut butter in with half the mixture to see how they came out and they are lovely! I only had smooth but crunchy would be better for the peanuts!

  • joanne n(90)

very easy, toddler assisted with mixing and weighing etc. and yummy,

  • Guest

Ps- Anyone made them with peanut butter??? Really want to make them for my hubby as he loves peanuts. Any ideas?

  • Guest

If I can make these anyone can! Everytime I usually when I make cookies for some reason they turn out like cakes but these were yummy and perfect! This is the recipe that i will always use can't wait to try smarties and other yummy stuff! 10 out of 10!

  • Guest

First attempt at the recipe, I only put 6 golf ball-sized blobs in the oven at first, didnt flatten them as you said; and boy do they spread! They've been in the oven 5 mins and doubled in size! Look and smell lovely though :)

We must be the strange ones here. My DD didn't like them and I made the chocolate ones but they did not taste chocolatey at all. My DD normally LOVES cookies/biscuits but she took one bite and gave it back lol.

Yum!! just made them with raisons..mmmmmmm

I've made these a few times now with M&Ms, Smarties, chocolate chips. They are nice but way too sweet! One is enough really!

  • Guest

Wow just like the one's you buy in the shop but cheaper!!! Me and the boys have decided to make them every weekend instead of buying them. I found it better to let them cool before removing off the tray before eating and storing.

I tried these with my 3yr old and they were sooo easy to make and came out perfect, I used dairy free marg and raisons and they were lovely. Will be making some more very very soon

These cookies are great, simple to make as a quick treat. I added some mini rolos that I had in the cupboard and they were fab!!

Just made these this evening with smarties in, and they are divine! Lovely and soft and chewy....very nice.

  • Guest

rachel did you have them in too long or too high? Have made these loads recently with smarties, raspberry & white chocolate and double chocolate and they really need 10 or 11 minutes only - any longer and they are too hard.

  • Guest

i'm afraid i didn't really like these, just too sweet and mine were quite hard work on the jaw (although that may have been my cooking style!)

  • Guest

Brilliant brillaint brilliant. I read the recipe wrong and added 2oz of cocoa and theyt were still fab

I made the double choc version of these cookies and they were gorgeous. Really chewy and yummy. I also made them massive and they were just like shop bought ones. Little bit of advice though, only leave them in for 12 mins, you might think they don't look cooked enough in the middle but once they are cooled they turn into "proper" cookies (there's no egg in the mixture so don't be afraid of undercooking.) Also leave lots of space on your baking tray in between each cookie as they spread LOADS! Good Luck - easy recipe with gorgeous results!

I've just made these double choc chip cookies... OH MY GOODNESS THEY'RE SWEEEEET! Think i'll use a little less sugar than the recipe says next time :)

  • Guest

  • Guest

Just made these and have to say they are YUMMY!!!! I love the ones from Asda bakery, and have been trying to find a recipe to some similar ones myself- these are pretty close, i love them! Thank you for sharing :) I guess i'd better save one for when my son gets home from school :)

These cookies are the best I've ever tasted - my oh says I should be selling them! I use maple syrup instead of golden syrup and never measure the chocolate chips - you can never have too much

  • Guest

thanks for a great recipe, truly delicious and enjoyed by everyone!

  • Guest

I just made these today and they're yummy! I chose this reciepe as I already had all the ingredients in the cupboard. Defnately recommend.

Absolutely Gorgeous and so so easy to make. We made double choc ones by replacing 25g flour with 25g cocoa then added some choc buttons as we didnt have any choc chips. They really were yummy, especially the larger ones we made, they were devine! they did take a bit longer to cook tho (bout 4 mins). Will defo be doing them again - so cheap to make! highly recommended

Made these on sunday and they are delicious! Recommend anyone to make them.

Made these for my little boy who is allergic to wheat, egg, milk and most additives. Rice flour works well for these and substituting for dark chocolate also worked a treat, he can't wait for the next batch!

I made these this week and i can tell you they were delicious, they did exactly what they said in the recipe "chewy and chocolately", i made large ones instead of small and they turned out just like the ones you buy in the shops.
