Awesome things we all did after school in the '90s

Modern technology means that kids nowadays are stuck on iPads or games consoles of an evening (and even more so this year than ever!) which is vastly different to how we remember spending our time after school. In fact, we would give anything to rush home at 3pm and do some of these things now.

Skip-its would provide hours of fun, especially in the summer. Although if you put a foot wrong you were in for a world of pain!

Everyone remembers and loves Arthur – we can even hear the theme tune as we’re writing this!

Before the days of sharing videos on Facebook, posting selfies on Instagram and browsing Twitter, social networking was, well, social. We would spend hours creating a website all about ourselves on Piczo, sending love to friends on Bebo and creating MySpace profiles, all while chatting to our friends on MSN Messnger for hours on end... despite just saying goodbye to them moments ago.

Claiming to be the world’s most-sour candy, these bad boys attracted a lot of attention after school.

Ah, the days of novelty processed foods. An old favourite of ours is turkey dinosaurs, smiley faces and baked beans.

Blue Peter badges, were, and still are, a status symbol. If you had one, not only could you get into loads of places for free, but your street cred among friends shot up.

This was back in the days when sweets could actually cost 1p, with the exception of some nicer or bigger sweets which would cost either 2p, 5p or even 10p. You would get a paper bag and spend a good 10 minutes carefully choosing your selection.

Were you even a '90s kid if you didn't have one of these purses?

Browsing the magazine stands to find the one with best freebie, as your mum queued up in the shop, was a highlight of going shopping after school.

These were the old-school versions of Buzzfeed quizzes. Every decent teen mag had a flow chart in it that would tell you something about yourself, all of which felt life-altering at the time. And then you'd do the quiz for your friends, too.

We all had our favourite songs to dance to, whether it was Word Up by Cameo, Video Killed The Radio Star by The Buggles or the incredibly hardcore End Of The Century by NO.9.

They were the band that everyone wanted to be a part of. And when they conquered the music world, they decided to venture over to the world of TV and starred in a series which, obviously, every single fan wanted a copy of on DVD.

... And hitting their window – whoops! These footballs were so much cooler than any average football because, well, they smelled like fruit.

Coming home from school with a Scholastic Book Fair leaflet was so exciting. You’d sit on the sofa and flick through the leaflet and circle all the books you wanted your parents to order for you. Topped only by the Argos catalogue.

We would spend hours marvelling at them. And we all had multiples of cards including Charizard, Squirtle and Eevee.

Cheesestrings, Dairylea Dunkers, Push Pops, Hubba Bubba tape, Fruit Winders and many more snacks in the ‘90s and ‘00s were made to played with before you ate them. Boy, did they make snack time fun!

When you were old enough to be allowed to venture further than the end of your road, a favourite pastime was to go and pay 50p to use a computer for an hour. This was despite having a computer in your own home!

We’d spend hours making so many different shapes with Hamma Beads, but colourful hearts were the ultimate.

All the kids from down your road would join in and see how many people could skip with a giant rope. There was always that one kid who couldn’t quite jump high enough!

Remember the days when everyone had a different ring tone? We were all guilty of scrolling through our solid Nokia 3310s, listening to every single ringtone the phone had to offer – and there were a lot – and selecting your favourite.

Kids today will never understand the struggle of having to actually wait to watch a movie or TV programme. Waiting for a tape to rewind felt like a lifetime and, although your mum would always tell you to rewind it once you'd finished watching, you would never learn.

Did this nifty trick really work? Who knows! But we'd do anything for a bit of Super Mario.

And being scared stiff of dropping it and scratching the CD inside.

You'd collect hundreds of them and keep them in perfect condition with the tags on in the hope that, one day, they'd be worth some money. That day never came.

If you had a pair of these babies, you were totally fashion forward.

It was the best way to show your love for your fave band.

And let's be honest, that was quite often.

Because we were so creative back then. Although, it was a struggle to get the computer to actually draw what you wanted and it was much easier to just use a pencil and paper.
