Autumn fun outdoors
Play in the autumn leaves
There's nothing that spells autumn quite like piles of brown, orange and red leaves piled on the ground and these make the perfect children's playground. What can be more fun at this time of year than kicking and throwing leaves in the air, gathering piles of leaves to climb on or bury in as leaf dens? Perfect autumn fun.
Hold some wacky autumn races
In the park, garden or woodlands set up some wacky races.
Challenge the children to race from one end to the other in a variety of ways - e.g with giant strides, backwards, hopping, sideways steps.
It's a great way of getting everyone moving and warmed up on a chilly day. Perhaps take some hot chocolate for everyone to wrap their cold hands around at the end of the races.
Feed our feathered friends
Take care of the birds and make some easy bird feeders to hang in your garden. Mix seeds with lard and mould into cookie cutters (or into half a coconut shell) and hang from branches.
Go on a treasure hunt
With a bit of preparation in advance, you can turn a walk into an exciting adventure. Set challenges of how many different sounds they can hear, how many different things they can spot on the way or ask them to find items, such as 7 different-shaped leaves, 5 pine cones, 3 conkers, etc.
Get ideas for walks & hikes
Find your local woodlands & parks
Bonkers for conkers
Head for woodlands and areas where there are horse chestnut trees and gather up some shiny brown conkers.
It's so exciting peeling back the prickly cases to discover the treasure inside. Of course - you can then play games of conkers.
Do some leaf and bark rubbing
Grab some crayons and a pad of paper and have some outdoor arty fun making bark or leaf rubbings.
If you use autumn colours such as reds, oranges and yellows on green or brown paper it looks really effective.
Your children might spot other things they can try rubbing too - such as drain covers, or patterns on the walls.
Have fun on the beach
Wrap up warm and head to the beach. Have fun running across the sand, jumping in the waves in your wellies and gathering shells. Take a flask of hot chocolate to warm up afterwards.
On yer bikes
Get the bikes out and head out on lovely autumn bike rides, crunching through leaves and admiring the colours of the season. Guaranteed to bring some colour to your cheeks!
Build a bonfire
As the nights draw in, it's the perfect time to build a bonfire and gather round to sing songs, drink hot chocolate and watch the stars. Magical!
Hunt for craft treasures
Head out on a walk, armed with bags or baskets and gather leaves, acorns and pine cones ready for a cosy afternoon of autumn crafts when you get back.
Build a stick den in the woods
Spend a happy afternoon in the wood building stick dens. Why not pack a picnic and a flask of soup or tea to enjoy in your finished den?
Toast some marshmallows
Kids LOVE toasting marshmallows over the bonfire (and so do adults!). It's what memories are made of.
Pick a perfect pumpkin (or two)
Head to your local farm and have fun picking your perfect pumpkins ready to carve for Halloween.
Go on a silvery web walk
Have an early morning or late evening walk, spotting sparkly, dewy spiders' webs. Take a camera to capture the prettiest.
