You will need

Ovenproof dish- You can't go wrong with this classic Pyrex rectangular dish. It's designed to last for ages  AND is heat-resistant to high temperatures. See more details here at Amazon.

Mixing bowl - this classic Pyrex bowl is a must-have for any kitchen – see more details here at Wilko.

Tips

This makes a great weaning food for babies! Just reduce the amount of sugar - or even leave it out altogether.

Make extra crumble and freeze ready to be sprinkled over whatever seasonal fruits you have to hand

Variations

  • If you use cooking apples instead of eating apples, you will need to add 1-2 tsp of sugar per apple, before topping with the crumble mixture
  • Add 1/2 tsp of cinnamon to the apples for extra flavour
  • Use pears, rhubarb, orange or blueberries instead of the apples or mix two different fruits together - and if you don't have fresh fruit use tinned fruit instead
  • For a crunchier topping add pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, nuts (macadamias, walnuts, brazils etc) roughly chopped to the crumble

Quick and easy to make this traditional crumble and delicious to eat - always popular with visitors too. I use dairy-free margarine instead of butter but love the extra crunch of the oats in fruit crumbles. If you forage for the free fruit it somehow tastes even better and costs next-to-nothing to make; even if you buy the fruit it is still pretty inexpensive. Very little can go wrong with this so even novices could tackle this with confidence. A wholesome, healthy, warming and filling pudding (or snack). If by any miracle you get leftovers, the foxes and birds would happily eat it!

Lovely and so simple to make! I used a mix of apples and blackberries, and for the topping I used wholemeal flour as suggested by the pp and added a handful of sunflower seeds. VERY yummy with vanilla ice cream :)

I love this recipe, it's so easy, and great for using up those leftover windfalls! I like to replace the white flour with wholemeal for a different texture and more wholesome flavour.

TOP TIP I always keep a tin of chopped apples in the cupboard ready to make this anytime. They're slightly sweeter apples too which I quite like.

Great fun recipe. Kira (3.5) had great fun mixing the crumble with a wooden spoon. I only had to rub in the marg a little at the end. Seemed fine with just apples and blackberries, no syrup.

made a smallish portion of this today using normal green apples i had to use up and it was very tasty - added some golden syrup over the apples and it was yummy. had to cook it for about 15mins longer than recipe stated though. Does anyone know if it could be frozen if i made a bigger portion next time?

  • Guest

Apple (from the garden) and blackberries (picked while walking the dog), for me! Best combination ever!!

I have been adding porridge oats to my crumble mix for years and it has always been a family favourite - recently tried using muesli instead - it's even better.

  • Sophie G(131)

Just made it with plums fresh from sisters garden

I made this yesterday with my 2yr old daughter and it was scrummy. The crumble was abit dry though so I'll add a little extra marg/butter next time. We used apples, pears, raisins and cinnamon and it was delicious!

Absolutely delicious! This gets the definite thumbs up. Bought a big bag of frozen peeled/sliced apples from Farmfoods (very cheap!) for the filling. Such a quick, easy and cheap pudding.

  • Rebecca L(273)

what was it like with the peaches? i have been considering what it would be like as my partner can be very picky he dosen't like warm pineapple or raisins although that does sound very nice.

Has anyone tried this in the slow cooker?

I think I used wrong type of marg as I found the crumble went more like pastry but I simply added a little more flour & a touch more sugar & perfect! The kids loved it as did the husband - infact they loved it that much I've bargained with them to do mroe chores if they want another!!!!

  • Guest

This is an all time favourite in our house. It alway's fetches back memory's of sitting round a table at gran's house, eating good nutritious food and picking on Dad for having to undo the top button on his trousers, something my kids pick on my husband for now!!

I am trying with apple and Banana!
