About

The yoga sessions work on yoga movements that are useful both in pregnancy and in labour. We will work on breathing and relaxation techniques as these are key in preparation for birth and in labour. Each session is adapted to the needs of the individual, everyone working at their own level. No previous experience of yoga is necessary. Please have available a mat, a firm pillow and if possible a chair, small stool and birthing ball.
This is my 32nd year of teaching pregnant women and I estimate that I have worked with over 2500 women. Please check my web site for positive birth stories. Under Resources on my website you can download my DVD and CD for pregnancy.

I attended Nerissa's pregnancy yoga classes from 25 weeks into my pregnancy and would venture as far as to say that it is one of the most important decisions I made while pregnant. I am so glad I attended the classes - the breathing and movement techniques that Nerissa taught were fundamental and I absolutely believe they were the key factor that allowed me to have a relatively quick, straightforward water birth. Nerissa is incredibly knowledgeable about childbirth and the classes themselves were very well structured, I felt there was a good balance between physically practising movements and breathing, and having breakout sessions where everyone in the class could ask questions and discuss topics relevant to pregnancy. The couples session was also very helpful and my partner absolutely felt more informed and prepared for labour etc. as a result. The power of the breath during labour is something I won't forget and I still try to remember to make use of it in daily life with two little ones(!). Overall I found the classes to be very empowering, mainly because they teach that regardless of what happens in labour, using the breath can help. For that reason I would highly recommend the classes to anyone hoping to maximise their chances of a positive birth experience.

Thanks Leah it was a pleasure and a privilege working with you and the other women in the group. I have worked with many wonderful women over the years and it has been and continues to be a joy. Thank you to you all. Nerissa :)

Nerissa was recommended to me by various friends who had attended her classes. I had a series of private lessons, attended a weekend couples’ pregnancy yoga class as well as a series of small group classes for pregnant ladies. Her teaching method is excellent, she is very clear in her instructions, highly informative about all aspects of pregnancy, labour and birth and her style is empathetic and encouraging. My labour was facilitated by employing techniques learned in Nerissa’s classes. My baby boy was ‘back to back’ so I stood up for 3 hours during the latter part of the labour and this helped to turn him over – gravity can be a wonderful thing! I employed the breathing techniques learned and breathed calmly all the way through the contractions. I can say that my labour was eased immeasurably by using the calm approach which Nerissa teaches. I was able to give birth without having any pain relief other than gas and air so I feel that I was able to experience the birth in full, and be fully present in the moment. I would heartily recommend Nerissa to anyone practising yoga, regardless of age, gender and physical ability. You will only gain from time spent on the mat with her.

When I looked into pregnancy yoga, I thought it would be about keeping fit and healthy throughout my pregnancy - but Nerissa's class was about so much more than that. I didn't attend antenatal classes and I was worried that I might regret that, but as a group we talked about everything pregnancy and birth related; I learned so much more than I expected to and I felt very well prepared for labour. I was really gunning for it by the end of the course! Unfortunately it turned out that my baby was breech, so I ended up having an elective c-section a week early, and this was not how I'd planned on having my baby! But Nerissa's techniques got me through it; even on the operating table I was able to prevent a panic attack by focusing on the things she had taught me. I've pulled out those techniques on so many occasions since, and I see them as lessons for life that will help me cope no matter what gets thrown at me. As well as learning the skills to get me through the birth of my son (and many a stressful moment since!) I have also met a great group of women who have been an amazing support and continue to provide brilliant advice and friendship throughout what is undeniably the most overwhelming experience of anyone's life! I'll always be grateful to them, and to Nerissa for facilitating us all :)

I got a lot out of Nerissa's pregnancy yoga classes. Firstly learning about the breathe was a God send when it came to my actual labour as it was the only thing keeping me together through the contractions! I also made a lot of new friends which has meant we all have an invaluable support network through the scary and tough time of becoming a parent, and have someone to chat to online during those night feeds! Also I did not enjoy my pregnancy very much and this gave me some much needed 'me' time to relax and get out of the house. Highly recommend for any first time mum to be.

I would highly recommend Nerissa's pregnancy yoga course. I absolutely loved it and it was both relaxing and educational about all parts of pregnancy and labour. If it's hadn't of been for the course of have been slumping about in bad posture, heightening the risk of my baby being in a bad position for birth, but by knowing to keep good posture I had a baby in a perfect position. The breathing and relaxation techniques are fantastic and help you stay calm in labour. Using low sounds to help get baby out instead of high pitch screaming which is no good for you or your baby! Thank you so much Nerissa! You transformed my pregnancy and labour into an amazing experience all round! x

I attended this course during my first pregnancy and found it to be so valuable. There's a strong focus on all aspects on pregnancy and labour. The class is broken up well with yoga movements and breakout sessions where the group discusses topics such as breast feeding, baby massage, etc. There are also occasional guest speakers. The teachings from this class kept me really grounded throughout my labour. I brought Nerissa's music for labour CD which I had playing all throughout established labour. It acted as a constant reminder to work with my breath and stay active. Nerissa also gives handouts at each session which are really useful - especially if the course finishes a few weeks before your due date. Nerissa is a true professional and I honestly feel that attending this class made my labour a lot smoother with no surprises - especially as one of her key teachings is to go with the flow because it's true that things very rarely go to plan! The group have also stayed in touch via a Facebook group and regular meetings which is a great support network for new mums. I would strongly recommend this class.

I loved this course - it has been the best thing I have done throughout my pregnancy. The course is not just to practice yoga - there is a big focus on preparing for labour, talking about pregnancy, labour and parenthood with Nerissa and the other women attending, and certainly on my course the atmosphere was hugely supportive. It was really relaxing and wonderful to have one evening a week dedicated to focusing on pregnancy. It has given me so much more confidence for labour. I would highly recommend it to ALL pregnant women and will definitely be attending if/when I have another baby.

I really recommend this class. I have just finished a 10 week course and attended a couple of years ago when I was pregnant with my first. The class is much more than a yoga class, Nerissa prepares you for labour, for going with flow when things don't go to plan and gives you breathing and movement techniques to help cope with the pain. It is the best preparation you can do for birth and we are lucky to have such a fantastic antenatal class available in Leicester. I have also stayed in touch with the girls from both classes and made great friends.

The best thing I did during my pregnancy! Learnt lots of invaluable techniques to help with pregnancy, birth, and beyond, I also found the non-yoga aspects really useful and interesting. I think the course was about £60 for a 10 week course (April 08), we also attended the one off Saturday morning Mums and Dads session which really helped my partner. The most fantastic thing of all was meeting 9 other Mums to be and forming great friendships. Our course was April 2008 and we still all meet up at least once every month!
