I don't even know where to start with this... my baby was so calm and chilled out until she was 3 going on 4 weeks old. Then all of a sudden she started crying inconsolably for no reason, at first it was mostly in the evenings and late afternoons but now it's almost all day except when she's asleep... I can't leave her with anyone because she cries if anyone else besides me tries to hold her, rocking her doesn't help, singing to her doesn't help, she hates swings, bouncers, jumperoo, tummy time, everything 😞 I just don't know what to do. She contorts herself when I hold her and only stops when I'm holding her in the standing position but even then she digs her feet into my stomach and it's painful, she claws at my face and scratches me because she won't let me cut her nails. Nothing I do makes her happy. We've seen GPs, health visitors, all of them told me it was colic and she would grow out of it by 4 months but if anything its got worse, now all they can tell me is "babies cry" but that's no help at all. I also have a 7 year old who is autistic and the crying really upsets her and she hides and covers her ears. I've tried explaining this to all the professionals we've seen but nobody seems to care. Please help 😭

Hello Deborah

I am sorry to hear of your distress, I will do my best to suggest some things that may help.

I am pleased to hear you have been to see the GP and your HV to get her checked over. I appreciate they haven't found anything 'the matter' with her. As much as this is really good news, it does not give you anything to try to help either does it.

As she started getting upset in the afternoon / evenings it does suggest that the idea of Colic may fit. This is the most common time of the day for this to happen and can make babies behave just as you have described.

I wonder though have you ever discussed with the GP she may have reflux? This is also very distressing for babies and cause a lot of upset. This link talks about reflux and also silent reflux and could be another idea to think about.

Babies do cry, and sometimes you never really find out why, which I appreciate is hard. I wonder have you heard of the period of purple crying? You can read more about it here:

One other idea I thought may be relevant is your LO may be crying due to a very normal stage of separation anxiety, which would explain their clinginess to you too? We have a link that talks about it in good detail here:

Finally, there is plenty of advice and support with crying babies as we know how tough this can be for the whole family - including your older daughter.

These links may also offer you something to work with to improver things for you all

If you remain worried about your baby you can always pop back to see your GP again to have her checked over to make sure nothing has been missed.

Please do reach out to us again if you'd like to chat more.

Best wishes

Tracey HV

Thank you for your reply Tracey. It's not reflux as my older daughter had that and she doesn't have any of the symptoms, plus she was absolutely fine until 3/4 weeks old. And it can't be colic or purple crying at 7 months either.
