My twin boys start secondary school in August after being accepted into a football programme. The school is in a different council area and requires them getting two buses. Get off one and the other is at the same stop. I will go on with them during the holidays to make sure they know where to get off etc. Do you think this is okay I need reassuring that I'm doing the right thing. Or should I say no to the program and let them attend a closer school?

They will be fine. My son started cycling to school as soon as he hit yr 7. I've never done a school run with him the whole time he's been there.

Do the run a few times with them during the holidays and make sure they have a plan b if they miss a connecting bus. When they start in September, for your own peace if mind maybe get them to drop a quick text at each point to let you know they are ok. I started backing off a bit when my lad started secondary school. He leaves this year and can happily navigate the bus system across the whole borough. Letting them get themselves to school and back without you is a vital part of their growth. As long as they know what to do if things go wrong ( a bus doesn't turn up ) it will be fine.

Aw I totally feel your worry and concern, I I such a worrier mum! But they would be fine, they will be together for starters not on their own. I think just out of primary school at 11 they still seem so young, but that will change and it would be a scheme for them to lose out on the opportunity. As you say do the journey with them a couple of times beforehand so it's familiar. It's not like not they have to walk between stops, so it sounds pretty safe too 😊.

Absolutely fine. Honestly.

They have each other to get through the early stages of anxiety. Presumably you'll give them a phone to call you in case of problems.

They are definitely old enough.

My dad (73) like to tell me repeatedly how he caught three buses across Manchester to go to school at age 7, because it didn't occur to anyone that he could go to the local school with the neighbours instead of the Catholic one across town.

You've got this. They've got this. Also - go them getting into football academy :)!

Thank you very much for your reply. Just needed peace of mind from other mums in similar situations. X

They'll be fine. I'm sure there will be others kids doing the same journey and they will meet and befriend them soon enough.
