Hello, I’m new to this and would welcome some advice please.

I had a period between 7-10 May and then began bleeding again on 18 May which has continued (like a relatively light period) ever since. Today (31 May), someone advised me to take a pregnancy test so I did, it’s a blazing positive!

Am I miscarrying? I can’t get hold of my GP and feel very shocked/overwhelmed at the moment.

If anyone has experienced anything like this I’d be grateful to hear from you.

Hi Sophie,

Just to offer a bit of official information...

The NHS says: "Bleeding during pregnancy is relatively common and does not always mean there's a problem [...] In early pregnancy, you might get some harmless light bleeding, called "spotting". This is when the developing embryo plants itself in the wall of your womb. This type of bleeding often happens around the time your period would have been due."

https://www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/related-conditions/common-symptoms/vaginal-bleeding/

However, they also say that bleeding in early pregnancy can sometimes be a "dangerous sign".

You should always mention any vaginal bleeding during pregnancy to your midwife asap. Chances are there's nothing wrong, but it's always better to be safe than sorry. If there is a problem, getting medical advice sooner rather than later is the safest thing for you and your baby.

Hi Sophie,

I had bleeding around the time of my period and I thought it was just spotting. Then my period never came. I found out I was pregnant and a few days later I rushed to emerg with pain and found out I had an ectopic pregnancy. Had surgery etc, so traumatic. Anyway, just wish I had taken the bleeding more seriously (not that I could have known then) but at least I can pass on the info now to others. Always better to check it out! Keep testing as well to see if HCG levels are decreasing, blood work would be the best way to see. Hope you are OK

Thanks for responding. I am still bleeding (not clots, just light but fresh blood) and still testing positive. I am worried it’s ectopic but GP wouldn’t see me and the Early Pregnancy Unit offered an appointment for 8 days time. Do you mind me asking what your symptoms were which led to emergency?

I hope you’re well and recovered now! Xx

Hi Sophie,

The bleeding I had was light. On and off spotting. In fact, bleeding as much as you say you are bleeding might not be ectopic. Not to scare you but, ectopic rupture is mostly internal bleeding.

my symptoms leading up to rupture were light spotting that went away after 3 days. Nausea, fatigue, breast pain. Like typical pms/preg stuff nothing weird.

if you have the following symptoms go to the hospital immediately: vomiting, intense lower abdominal pain like bad bad trapped gas feeling it is very acute it will get to the point where you cannot walk, and the one that I clued in that smthg was wrong: SHOULDER PAIN. The pain in the shoulders will feel like someone is stabbing you where your neck meets your shoulder. It is so intense.

I cannot believe that your doc is waiting 8 days to see you that makes me so mad.

you might be miscarrying, and not ectopic. But I don’t know how to accurately diagnose that you know what I mean? If I were you, I would go to the hospital regardless and demand an TV ultrasound and blood work. Just tell them you are early pregnant and bleeding. You need to know your HCG levels. It is vital! They should be doubling every 48hrs.

if you don’t have abdominal pain you are still in a good window to have the ectopic treated with methotrexate. Once it ruptures, you will most likely need emergency surgery and they might have to remove your tube or ovary. And, it is life threatening. I don’t want you to be afraid just take it seriously. You have some time (9-12 hrs) after rupture to do smthg about it before your body starts to shut down. There is time but you must act wisely. I am alive because of one nurse in emerg who took me seriously. She saved my life.

I am so sorry you are experiencing this. Please try to remain calm. The body is capable of amazing feats and trust your intuition!!!! You are a strong woman capable of anything and you can face whatever comes. And again, it might also be nothing serious and you might still be pregnant and continue carrying to term!

All is not lost. Just be smart and proactive. You know the signs now. And don’t feel ashamed to just march into emerg and demand to be considered. Our healthcare system doesn’t put women first, you have to put yourself first.

please let me know what happens if you can.

praying for you

Hi J,

I finally got round to my appointment today and your suspicions were right, it’s ectopic and I’m now waiting in the hospital for next steps.

I’m glad I saw your message and pushed them to scan me when they couldn’t see anything in the womb.

You may have saved an emergency.

blessings to you,

Omg Sophie. I am so sorry!!!!! Thank you for updating me I have been thinking about you the past few days.

Hopefully you can get Methotrexate injection and don’t need to have surgery. You are not alone. 1 in 50 pregnancies is ectopic. The doctor who operated on me said they get 3-4 ectopics at the hospital per week!!! I was shocked. So many?! And yet no one ever talks about it.

Keep advocating for your health. Make sure the nurses keep monitoring your vitals at the hospital. If your blood pressure keeps dropping and heart rate keeps going higher, that is the warning sign. The OR was cleared for me when my vitals started to go in the wrong direction. Low blood pressure, high heart rate. Ask for the readings and make sure they check your vitals at least every 30 min.

my email address is info@jetsetjustine.com if you’d prefer to contact me there. Or whatever you feel. I get notifications on this chat anyway. I was alone going through this and clueless. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions at any point in this.

i don’t know if you believe in a God but just know that you are loved and you will be OK. You are strong and can power through. You can do this. We are only given what we can handle. You must be one of the tough ones. A warrior.

Sending you my own warrior energy ❤️
