Had a missed call earlier with a voicemail, when I listened to it the woman on the line was claiming to be from the HMRC, and they asked me to call this number back regarding some serious fraud which has been committed in my name.

After consideration I stupidly called the number back, the woman on the line advised I currently owe £4,000 roughly and to make a payment ASAP, otherwise there could be serious consequences for me.

Put the phone down at this point, and thinking this can be not be legit, I would of course never have made a payment, or given out my bank details as thinking the HMRC would never call you like that, disgusting the way this happens as there is gonna be someone somewhere who gets caught out, and fooled

I would contact the attorney General of your state and report it, give them all relevant info and leave it in their hands. Thankfully you did the right thing.

Sorry, I'm just realizing this is an English web page, don't you have something like that in your government that takes down scammers

Sure there is a way you can report calls like this online and thinking I will do so

Main reason I rang it back at first, due to the fact my first thought when I heard HMRC was that it may have been some issue with my tax, I did quickly realise when speaking to the caller it was not genuine at all, as she mentioned a warrant could be issued if I didnt pay this some of money

Calls like this do leave you feeling anxious though

To be honest you wouldnt be the only person to get caught out like that. Just note for next time never phone the number they give you. Always google the number (for HMRC for example). If its legit they will have a note on your account. Glad you never got scammed.

You right though. There will be people who sadly will get scammed. Elderly, vulnerable or even younger people. No idea how they sleep!!

My MIL isnt the most tech savvy and she messaged me last year. She received a text message from “whatsapp” saying she had to start paying £5 p/m to use it and click HERE. Luckily she messaged me first about it and i looked at it right away and could tell it was scam. I done a bit snooping and told her it was rubbish and how you could tell. Problem is she would have paid it bless her if we hadnt messaged.

These scammers are horrible, no idea how they sleep at night either, glad your MIL had messaged you first, would be so easy for people to get caught out

I think I am going to start googling any numbers, and seeing if there is any comments online as I know there is a website where people leave negative feedback

One other thing I am worried about now was the fact I did call the number back, and could possibly be routed to a different country and could end up with a costly phone bill

Your absolutely right, they are horrible. Im glad she did too. She knows im clued up with it so i think that helped. Even with my DD and DS ive had to go over it all with them cos its so frequent now.

Theres a website called “who called me?” Thats very reliable too.

Google the number and see if you can find a location or check your phonebill online if your able. I hope not for you. Shame they catch folk out all the time! God knows how they sleep.

And yes I did google the number, and appears there is a good few negative comments and it appears to relate to some sort of HMRC scam in the North of Wales

Just take it as it is hun. A lesson learnt. These things sadly do happen. Atleast you know its not going to be some extortionate phone bill.

Some seem so genuine ive seen myself clicking then going “oh wait a minute” cos it takes you to payments. The worst ones are the “we are holding a package for you” ones!
