So my little girl is 12 months 24th July, she’s recently had a viral infection she wasn’t well for 13 days she is getting a lot better now… all of a sudden she will not take her bottle she usually has 3 7oz bottles she takes like 2oz of each one then won’t drink it she’s not sucking on the bottle properly either how she normally would just sort of got her mouth open moving her tongue. I am very worried about her not getting enough nutrients as she isn’t a big eater either she was small baby 5lbs 3oz gaining weight fine the whole time she is small anyways but I don’t know what to do it’s come out of nowhere she would always take her bottles usually!!!

Hi Kaitlan

I am sorry to hear that your LO has been unwell.

It can take LOs a bit longer than adults to recover from any illness. It is very normal for LOs to go off their foods/drinks when poorly and on the road to recovery.

It may be offering smaller amounts more often to help keep her hydrated would be better for her. Offering the drink out of cups or syringes if she is refusing the bottle.

Is she having plenty of wet nappies or have these dried up? It may be worth speaking with a pharmacist about ways to support her hydration as we know LOs can become dehydrated quickly. Dehydration - NHS (www.nhs.uk)

The same with foods offering smaller but more often may also be helpful. Yoghurts, puree fruit maybe helpful to soothe her if she is still feeling unwell or not her usual self.

You may find Weaning | Start 4 Life (www.nhs.uk) helpful in looking more at ideas for food at this young age.

I hope this helps in some way

Best wishes

Emma

Thank you spoke to the doctors today and they said as she’s coming up to one to carry on doing what I’m doing offer her the bottle but if she won’t take it it’s fine as she will be on cows milk in a couple of weeks the sippy cup works also!
