Really struggling right now.

My son is just over two and half he’s currently awaiting diagnosis for autism.

This is all new to me, I have two other sons but not ever dealt with this.

Hes showing the obvious signs of autism arm flapping, fiddles and rolls ribbons string with his fingers.

In the last two weeks doesn’t like certain noises covers his ears.

his eye contact is getting better since starting nursery but he doesn’t really play with other children.

I think the main thing I’m struggling with is he doesn’t talk he’s very vocal with noises but doesn’t talk, what if he never talks? I feel like I can’t connect with him.

Hi Laura, hope you are ok. I just wanted to reply as I have an older brother who is autistic (he’s in his early 50’s) and my husbands niece is also autistic (she’ll be 8 in a few months). Having grown up with my brother being autistic I always thought his little traits were just him, but having been around our niece and seeing her grow and develop it’s made me understand autism more. Both like to have their ears covered and find this helps with being around noisy places. I think this has helped the little en a lot with her social interaction. From what I understand all of the noises are very distracting so having ears covered just helps them be relaxed. My brother can’t talk properly (he makes sounds and shows us things) however things have changed a lot since he was young and there’s a lot of research and resources out there now for parents, teachers, etc, to use. My niece can talk (from memory I don’t think she was talking at your sons age)… her language skills are constantly developing and she loves to sing.

There’s a large age gap between me and my brother, so I obviously didn’t know my brother when he was very young. However everything you describe is what my niece was like when she was younger. I know her mum and dad also struggled with connection, which is totally understandable when it’s eye contact, words, etc, that usually help form a bond. But please don’t worry about this. One day everything just clicked and that special bond was there.

For you to even write/worry about your son, it sounds like you’re an extremely loving mother and the best mum he could ever ask for.
