My toddler generally poos 1-2 times a day but now we have started potty training he seems to just constantly poo until he gets bored! Wearing a nappy this never happens. After an hour of backwards and forwards on his potty earlier today I said no to using it again, and he just pooed down his leg! Should I be worried about malabsorption or is this just behavioural? Thanks

Hello Mel

Your LO is used to pooping in his nappy, so using the big boys potty may be a bit of a novelty for him. Nappies are also highly absorbent so it is likely that the poo seems firmer in his nappy than it does seen in its raw state!

If your LO is using the potty well, then I would allow him to explore this new routine as much as he likes, and offer encouragement as he adapts and thrives in his new found independence.

It is possible that your LO is having what is known as Toddler Diarrhoea, which could explain his frequent need to use the potty. You can read more about it here:

https://www.wsh.nhs.uk/CMS-Documents/Patient-leaflets/PaediatricDepartment/6293-1-Dietary-management-of-toddler-diarrhoea.pdf

If he is otherwise well, developing on target and still having plenty of wee's then I would not worry too much as wait to see if things settle down.

If you think he is poorly of perhaps has a tummy upset it maybe worth having a chat with your GP to rule any other cause out.

Best wishes
