My DS was sick once in the night. Today he is fine but I have kept him off school. He is badgering me for food as I type! I called the school and they said I need to keep him off for 48 hours. It doesn't seem to be a bug, in fact I have no idea what caused it as we all ate the same and are fine.
Do I have to keep him off for 48 hours if he is ok?

I had a similar instance where one of mine was sick in the night just the once and when I was dropping off the other spoke to the class teacher who reminded of the 48 hour policy that if they weren't sick again before the next morning and were obviously eating well and well in themself to just ake them back in.
As it turned out, although he had been well and eating fine in the morning he did flag in the afternoon and really wasn't fuly himself so again applied common sense and kept him off the next day.

All the advice you've been given on here is very good & it sounds as though you've taken everyone's advice & made the sensible decision to keep your Lo off for 48hrs:). As a preschool owner I just wanted to try to explain the reasons for the 48hrs from the point of view of schools/nurseries.
Firstly, 48hrs is the required exclusion period in the Department of Health Guidelines for Prevention of Infection in Schools & Nurseries.
Second, it is important to remember that, although your child and all members of your family may be fit & healthy (apart from the tummy bug:lol:) that is not the case for every child & family. many children who attend school/nursery (or members of their families) may have a depressed or compromised immune system, or may have a medical condition that makes a tummy bug much more serious for them than it is for others. What is a minor unpleasant inconvenience for your LO could be a hospital job for one of these children.
On a personal note, as a diabetic, I have had the terrifying experience of being taken to hospital with blue lights after becoming hypoglycaemic & unconscious whilst still vomiting,
having caught a tummy bug from my daughter. The paramedic said I was incredibly lucky not to have choked to death on my own vomit. Without being overdramatic, this could easily have been a tragic death and a 2yr old child growing up without her mummy if my husband had not come upstairs & found me at just the right moment and then taken the correct emergency action & called 999 pretty damn quick! (Bless him, he does have his uses:lol:)
Sorry if this seems a bit of an over-reaction, but just wanted to clearly illustrate, for anyone who is in any doubt, that the 48hr rule is there for good reason and is not schools/nurseries being awkward.
Hope your LO feels better soon Naomi, & good on you for being responsible & keeping him at home:hug:
