Hello,

I have a 3.5 year old. Who is a lovely little boy and loves socialising. Hes an only child.

So a couple of times we have had the odd complain here and there from school and either its been about not listening, to not sitting at circle time. Yesterday he drew on another child's forehead, the teacher asked him to draw on a paper instead and not sure why he drew on someone else?!? Unlike him.

today the teacher said he climbed on someone and scratched someone because the child was asked to tidy up by the teacher and my son didnt get the task of putting away the toys.

The teacher was very flustered and annoyed as she said that my son wont sit still during circle time or story time.

I am not being biased but I feel that he is genuinely a sweet caring child at home and listens to us usually. But it makes it sound like he is a beast at school. I feel awful as a mum, and ashamed at myself least to say. Not sure why.

I do wonder if its because my husbands parents dote on him too much, and every-time theres been a pattern on how he has seen them he has acted up. He has gotten attached to the nanny but her time is up soon and shes now being weaned off the schedule too.

As a punishment I have taken away his favourite toys today (trains) as consequences to what he's done. Is that an awful thing to do? Im so sad and upset I got angry with him and yelled at him for misbehaving in school twice.

thank you x

This is awful x bless your heart.

Not sitting still at circle time should not be labelled as naughty actually because there are many children who have ASD/ADHD who are actually unable to sit still for story/circle time as well as others who have their own mind and just want to play and can't bear to sit and listen to a boring story!

As each child is individual is actually ask the staff how they plan to support your child as he finds it challenging to sit through story time.

When I worked at a pre school I used to take a little group of children who were unable to sit still off into another space and do something different with them like play a little game do as not to distract the ones who could sit and listen.

At the moment I wouldn't panic about his behaviour it's only a few incidents and the not sitting still thing I wouldn't class as bad behaviour especially in a child so young.
